(book) This quotation is from the novel Shane by Jack Schaefer, written in 1949. It continues to be a classic piece of American literature, capturing the western style and setting. Shane, the title character, is a mixture of manners and manliness. Shane is chivalrous, mysterious, and loyal. The character, Shane, is likeable and respected. He makes life in the west seem attractive.

During his stay, Shane showed qualities of bravery, honor, and protectiveness for the Starrett family. He acted in many chivalrous ways, which is why everyone respected and loved Shane. "Bartender, do you have any soda pop?" Shane asks on behalf of Joey, to spare him any trouble at all. (movie) This demonstrates Shane's courtesy and protectiveness toward Joey. When the Starrett's invite Shane for dinner, Shane notices that Marian uses the good china.

He was back somewhere along the dark trail of the past", depicting how mysterious Shane seems to others. In the beginning, Joey triggers his gun and Shane reacts, pulling his gun. "You " ve got me snorting, son", Shane says in defense, which makes the Starrett's wonder why he would react like that. Marian wonders, "Wasn't it peculiar how he wouldn't talk about himself?" she says in eager fashion.

Shane had the whole family talking and wondering about his mysterious past. Though his past is a mystery, the Starrett's trust Shane for his loyalty to them. Shane acts like a one-of-a-kind gunslinger by being loyal to Joe Starrett, even though he didn't know Joe very well. While Shane was in the bar, Fletcher offers him a job. Shane bluntly replies, "I work for Joe Starrett!" (movie) This quote shows his loyalty toward Joe. "A man has to pay his debts", Shane says in reply to Joe, asking him about the stump.
