The Statue of a and the Portrait statue of a boy both depict similar subjects, however are greatly different in how they accomplish this task. Through detail, or lack there of, the Greeks and Romans are able to display a certain value they have in its members. These two statues were made about 500 years apart and approach the sculpting process quit differently. The Greek statue seems to use geometric exaggerated lines to form the body while the Romans use a more realistic approach and sculpt the body with a more rounded finish. Statue of a, from about 590 B. C and Portrait of a boy, from about the first century, do not share any great technical aspects and are basically nothing alike. The Statue of a represents a Greek male.

With one foot forward, the statue at the same time, represents movement and is able to stand on it own. This also gives the over life size figure, visible weight. In this early figure, geometric forms seem to predominate, and anatomical details, such as the chest muscles and pelvic arch, are presented with somewhat of exaggerated lines. Although the exaggerated lines show where these muscles belong, the detail is still missing.

Looking up and down this nude body, at this miss proportioned and lacking of detail body, the hair is what grabs my attention. The hair is carved with detail not noticeable in the rest of the body. As well, although the fists are clinched and still bonded to the body, the legs and elbows are separated. The ability to move around and inspect the statue makes a big difference than if it was up against a wall, or just looking at its picture. The legs, which support the weight of the statue, have a visible strength which is seen in the knees. The head is what carried the most detail, the ears although to far back, are intricately designed.

It is the ability to walk around the entire statue that allows me to see the different aspects and places where attention to detail was placed. However, he does not expand into three dimensional space; he has a closed-off, column-like appearance The Statue of a depicts a Greek man in the nude. Although he looks like a man, the large scale, and the miss proportioned features makes it un naturalistic. The toes are too long, the genitalia is unrealistically small, and the joint lines are exaggerated. As well, there lacks detail in the eye and the neck is somewhat extended.

Overall it seems as an accomplishment because of the ability to stand on its own and not need support rods or back walls, as some earlier statues. After seeing the Statue of a the Portrait statue of a boy was surprising. The great attention to detail was noticeable at first sight. As the title says, this is a statue of a young boy.

However instead of Marble, bronze is used. This material may have been used to show a higher class than just a regular citizen. Also, this boy is clothed. This was most likely the son of a king of some sort. The next thing noticeable was the lack of feet and missing eyes. Although small, all the features are to scale.

The chest and arm muscles are smooth, rounded and lifelike. The pose of this boy seems to be somewhat of an orator by the motion of his hands. The ability to walk around and view this statue helps greatly. Attention to detail to greatly visible. The hair, the ears, the chest, and surprisingly the cloak which is draped over the young boys arms. Portrait of a boy is incredibly naturalistic.

The lack of total definition and facial hair helps depict his young age. The Statue of a age is not so evident. However he seems to be possibly twenty or so. There are not many technical similarities between these two statues.

Portrait of a boy has a lot of detail, and Statue of a does not. Portrait of a boy seems to be flawless when it comes to detail. Statue of a is un lifelike and its features are unnatural. As well, Statue of a, has little facial expression, and hands and feet which are close to the body. Portrait of a boy, Is an open pose, and is standing loosely. Both Statue of a and Portrait of a boy are of younger men possibly near the same age.

They are both standing tall and proud, with a serious expressions across their face. These statues depict a man of honor, or an image of how men should be in that society.
