Stimulatory Between The Tabloid And Broadsheet Magazines example essay topic

I have chosen to compare The Sunday Times' Culture with The news of the world's Sunday magazine. Culture is taken from a broadsheet newspaper and the Sunday magazine from a tabloid. News International who owns the largest percentages of newspaper circulation in Britain owns both papers. The most obvious different in the magazines is their size Culture is larger than the tabloid's magazine.

The front covers of the magazines are also very different, Culture has use very dark and soft colours such as dark blues and light yellows. Where as the Sunday magazine uses bright bold greens, blues and red on a white background that makes it stand out. The use of images on the front cover is important and on the broadsheet there is only one main picture, which is the main focus of the page, and nothing is covering the picture. The information on what is inside the magazine is to the side of the picture in bold but quite small front.

On the tabloid's magazine there is one main picture like the broadsheet, but there is also smaller images placed around it so as well as having large bold writing telling a reader of what's inside the magazine, there are also some images as well. Unlike the broadsheet some writing which makes the picture seem less important covers the main centre picture on the tabloid. Also the tabloid chooses to use a picture of Stella McCartney who is a fashion designer and the broadsheet has gone with a picture of Al Pacino who is an actor. The tabloid could use this as an excuse to put a picture of an attractive young woman on their front cover and to advertise that it is an "exclusive" which makes it unique and desirable. Where as the broadsheet chose their picture because is tells the reader about the main interview inside the magazine. A stimulatory between the tabloid and broadsheet magazines is that they both have an advertisement on the inside cover and all throughout the magazine.

The differences in advertisements is quite interesting because in the broadsheet which is aimed at social class of As to C 1's the advertisement are for more expensive products such as cars and computers. Whereas the tabloid, which is aimed at a social class of C 2's to Es the products are much cheaper such as low cost Jewry and cloths. The broadsheet also advertises high culture advents such as plays and ballet. This is because people who read broadsheets are thought to have more money and be more interested in higher culture media texts than those who read tabloids, this is the same as the tabloids send a great deal of time coming the happenings in soaps because they believe there readers are more interested in those media texts. Both magazines use a lot of images, the tabloid more than the broadsheet. But the chosen images used by each paper are quite different.

Most of the images used by the tabloids are catching stars unaware so they don't look their best. The paper doe this to show them as being human and not always perfect and "glam". The broadsheets images are mostly screenshots or the people are aware that a picture is being taken of them and would be set up to make them look there best. The stories used in the tabloid are now as human-interest stories; they are mostly to do with famous people and their lives.

They use these type of stories because it allows the reader to escape there own live for a short time and imagine themselves being they wealthy people. They also show the side of people that not many see, and shows that everyone has problems in their lives. The stories and not in great detail as well due to the social class aimed the level of contexts is very low compared to the broadsheet which has a much higher level of contexts. The stories go into much more detail and at to do with more higher culture media texts such as theatre and books. Both magazines have week's television listings. The also both have a "pick of the day" suggesting the best programme of the day.

Each paper has a different view on what is the best show of the day; once again this factor will depend on the viewer of the media. The tabloid has gone for a drama about a woman whose family is killed and she is left unable to speak, and the broadsheet has chosen an educational programme about pyramid. From theses choose we get a good idea of these magazine's target audience. The tabloid is aimed at popular culture viewers and the broadsheet at higher culture.
