This took him in to a life of collecting debts and running numbers for the mob.

He had everything he thought he ever wanted. He had money and could do what ever he wanted. He learned quickly the rules and the most important rule of them all never to rat. After a while, the big boss's son wanted to make an example of Smudgie, mostly because he was getting too much power. Therefore, they put a hit out on Smudgie. Therefore, he decided to make amends and take some money to give it to Gotti himself. Gotti was impressed by the balls on this guy and became his friend. This took him to the big time. Tony reopens Jilly and it becomes once again the hottest spot in New York. But this time he did not trust his partners.

Everything was going beautifully so his partner persuades him to open a casino in Cuba. That becomes the hottest club. Things are wonderful and they are living like kings. He misses the States and sets up a meeting with Gotti to discuss opening the Poconos as a resort for the wise guys. Gotti says he will sleep on it. When he gets back things are going OK, until one night the Cuban mob comes in and starts winning the house.

He finds out that one of his partner's rats him out and all hell breaks loose. He escapes back to the States. Just when he thinks, he is safe. His partner on the advice of Frank Sinatra rats him out he spends some time in jail, does it quietly and released to live a life with his wife and family. Through it all, he was around the men who started it all. They put Kennedy in the White House and watched him take the fall.

He saw Marilyn leave Frank for Jack. He saw the power, the money, the fame and the control these people had on the whole world. So the advice he gives to his son is stay away. Once you go too far you can never go back and a life like that is no life at all.
