Personal Strengths and Weaknesses While many people tend to listen to family, friends, or co-workers about their own strengths and weaknesses, it will often come down to the individual's own personal assessment of themselves as to what improvements or adjustments one must make. As with any subject, there are pro's and con's, or in this case strengths and weaknesses, in each and every one of us. Unfortunately, only a few care to relish on the weaknesses, and instead focus only on their strengths. When I think of strengths or weaknesses, I often try to think of weaknesses first. I am not a negative person nor am I always thinking of the worst possible scenario, but rather focus on faults first. Due to that thinking style or habit, let me start this paper with what I perceive to be my weaknesses.

This essay may not include all of my strengths or weaknesses, but I feel it is a major portion of them. First I wish to mention a weakness. While at work or at home I tend to get sidetracked, or become one-track minded, when working on a problem. For instance, while at work if I am in the middle of a report or gathering information for an aircraft issue we are having, I tend to get so focused that I completely lose track of any other issues that may arise or inadvertently ignore anyone or anything that may come up to discuss another issue with me. Maybe it would be called becoming "over focused" to give a definition to the state I am in at that time. As many people know in this day and age one really needs to be able to multi-task to be able to perform the everyday tasks that come up occasionally.

Unfortunately, I am still learning to become a "multitask er" but do believe that I am working on achieving it. A second weakness of mine is that once a solution is found, I tend to completely remove myself from the issue without properly following through to ensure the solution actually resolved the original issue. Often I give an individual an answer to his question and then thank him for asking it before that individual has a chance to ask a follow on question. This weakness can also relate to home and of course while being involved on any working team. I am sure there are more weaknesses of mine, but would like to share some strengths that I believe I possess. While I realize many people may have better organization skills, I feel that is a strength of mine.

While at work, I often get to work very early as to organize my day, and to help others prepare for the issues that may arise throughout the day. I am often called upon when a person must give a presentation to a group and is not yet ready to present any material. I will then look through the individuals material and decide how exactly he should present it, and in what order. Another strength I believe I have is the ability to quickly resolve issues between individuals. In many occurrences at work, issues on an aircraft will become personal and often people will be offended by another individuals actions or words.

I have been told I am a people person and often become involved in argumentative situations and am asked to come up with a solution. I believe this is an attribute that I am recognized as having and because of that, am asked to resolve several personal issues as well as aircraft issues. While I do believe that I may have many more strengths and weaknesses, I regard those I mentioned as the few I need to address immediately. When an individual recognizes his or her own weaknesses, and admits to them, then maybe the hardest part of the improvement plan is over.

As stated earlier, many people do not admit they have a weakness thus they never work to improve upon them. With my weakness of becoming "over-focused" with one issue, I have begun to take more time to document the entire issue and record everything that might be involved with that issue. Upon doing that, I believe that will allow me to be able to stop at any given time during the process to address another issue or discuss another problem with any individual and not be afraid that I will lose track of my original issue. As for my second issue of not following through to make sure the issue has been resolved, I believe that will just take some self discipline to remind myself to ask the question "Did that resolve your issue?" or "Is there any other concerns you have?" before terminating the communication. Rather than cut people off or pretend that everything is resolved, I need to ensure that the original issue, or any other issues that may arise along the way, are completely resolved.

In conclusion, I realize that everyone has strengths and weaknesses, but not all individuals are willing to admit to themselves that they have a weakness. For those of us that do admit that we have a weakness, I believe that the hardest part is over and that the resolution for this weakness is easily attainable if you set you mind to it, and develop a plan. With the strengths an individual may possess, those should be utilized at every given opportunity and often they can help another individual learn to acquire those strengths.
