High school stunned by tragedy HATTIESBURG- Two people were killed Friday morning in front of Davies High School when the brakes failed on a school bus causing the bus to jump the curb and strike the two. Assistant principal, David R. Smoots, 36, and a senior student, Janice Snorgrass, 17, were fatally struck by the school bus as it arrived at Davies High School. The bus, carrying 25 students, jumped onto the curb next to the entrance of the school building, killing the victims instantly. None of the 25 student passengers was injured. Investigators determined the cause of the tragic accident to be brake failure.

'We have checked the brakes and determined that a brake fluid line had ruptured,' said Captain George Frangoulis of the Hattiesburg Police Department. He stated that no charges would be filed. 'The campus is in shock,' said Luke Spivey, Student Council Vice President. Mr. Smoots, a well-liked administrator, had served as Assistant Principal for five years. Janice Snorgrass was a straight-A student and Student Council president. 'It was the worst thing I have ever seen, both will be sorely missed,' said Principal Drazsnzak as he announced that classes were cancelled for the rest of the day and will be suspended on Monday for funeral services.

The Student Council has planned a memorial service on Monday night at 7 p.m. in the Davies High School auditorium. 'We wish everyone would come to the memorial service to pay their last respects to our dearly departed friends,'s aid Spivey. According to the Benham Funeral Home spokesman, the funeral for Smoots will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Church of the Ascension Episcopal Church. The funeral for Snorgrass will be at 10 a.m.

Monday at First United Methodist Church.
