Students And Staff example essay topic

I was asked to respond to an opinion paper written by Amanda-Lynn Bask will. The topic of the opinion paper was the current dress code. After reading the paper, I would make the following comment. This school has a handbook for staff that contains the regulations and policies that we have developed over the years of B RHS.

These policies have been adopted to give a definite direction for the school. Prior to the current year, there was a dress code in the handbook which had been written many years ago. It is the mandate of the administration of the school to review these policies at least on an annual basis and more frequently if required. It is the view of the current administration that it is possible to change or alter any policies.

The changes would be brought about to make the policies more applicable for students and staff. Obviously, there would need to be good reasons to change the policy. The previous dress code was very vague and didn't really give a strong guideline to follow. Basically, extremely objectionable clothes would be addressed by staff. For example, if a student was wearing a shirt that containing writing that was obscene, the student would be asked to change or cover the material in some way. After suggestions from some staff, students and parents, a revised policy was written.

Information about a new policy was taken from stakeholders. It is true that not every parents, student and community member was interviewed. However, the representative council, the School Advisory Council, for these groups was consulted prior to and following writing the revised policy. From here, parents, staff and students were notified in June 2002 about the changes. This was to allow students to make appropriate choices when purchasing clothing for the upcoming school year. In September 2002, students and parents were again alerted in writing about the changes.

Students were told verbally several times during the first days of school. It was expected that some students might not like the policy. Frankly, it has not been hotly contested by any large group of students. In fact, students have been very cooperative in the most part. I could certainly debate the merits of dress codes, ranging from uniforms to no dress code at all. As a responsible staff, we have tried to develop a reasonable policy that allows students and staff to be comfortable during the work day.

The code is slightly relaxed for dances, but is basically in place. Clearly, it is a judgment that needs to be made, and it will not always be popular with all people involved. However, this is the policy at present. It will change if it is shown that a better policy is possible.
