There are so many ideas out there that you want to use for your classroom, but the question is which ones are the best? This article discusses what is metacognition, its variables, and why it should be used in the classroom. First of all, what is metacognition? It is having knowledge, understanding, control over, and appropriate use of that particular knowledge.

This sounds great, but how will it be used in the classroom? This is an important type of learning that may be an important asset to your classroom. It involves conscious awareness and conscious control in providing the students with an ability to read to learn. Texts, tasks, strategies, and learner characteristics are the four variables that present reading to learn from a meta cognitive perspective. Text refers to the learning materials, which influence comprehension and memory. To help assist the students in trying to understand the text, you need to understand it first.

Knowing the vocabulary, text structure, and what goes on in the story is very crucial to the students. They rely on the teacher to pick up on their downfall, so then we as teachers need to adjust our lesson plan to accommodate students with special needs. Another variable of metacognition in reading to learn pertains to the task that the reader is required to perform. Like most reading tasks, the student must develop some type of meaning out of the text.

The students need to learn from the beginning that the purpose of reading is to develop some type of meaning or understanding about what they have just read. It is also important that the student be able to know when something has gone wrong or right. This develops as they age, but it is important to help them in the beginning. There are also two different strategies, ? fix-up? strategies to resolve comprehension failures and studying failures to enhance storage and recovery when comprehension failure is not necessarily an issue. Students use a variety of strategies, but there is always a distinction between the good and the poor readers.

It is not that the poor readers are bad; they just haven? t been showed the right skills that they need. As the students age, applying studying strategies won? t do much good. As they get older they have most likely developed their own type of studying skills, but you still have to watch because there are sill some that need us to show them the way. A final category of metacognition in reading to learn is the awareness of the learner of his or her own characteristics. Here again, the reader must be able to take awareness about what is going on. This again is also dependent on age, and for the younger ones we need to help them get on the right path to their reading career.

These four variables may all seem to make sense right now, but everything changes when you are in an actual classroom. Each child is different and this may not want to be the route that you want to take a particular child, but for some metacognition will make a world of difference. Metacognition will help the students to take an active role in the classroom, but you as the teacher must make sure that they are given that opportunity.
