The number of households that start their day with "buenos dias" rather than "good morning" is growing sharply. The Hispanic population grew 71 percent in the 1990's, making it the fastest growing minority group. The influx of Spanish-speakers has had dramatic consequences for English as a Second Language programs. Educators say the classes are filling up as fast as they can create them. An elementary teacher who helped an incoming student who didn't speak English inspired me. That teacher inspired me to want to become an ESL teacher so I can help children who do not speak or understand the language.
I realized what a great positive impact she had made in that child's life and I know I will have that kind of impact on many children by going into ESL. My academic objectives would be to learn how to teach students how to read especially those students who have not had formal education in their countries and are in the upper grades. I hope to learn how to teach ESL student's strategies they can use in the content areas to make it easier for them to learn new material. It is important for me to learn how to teach them study techniques so that they can achieve good grades. Total Physical Response (TPR) has an impact on the student's education. ESL students need to see what is being taught.
Visual aids play an important role in the classroom. I want to learn different techniques to meet all the different needs of each student's learning style. I would like to learn everything I possibly can to maybe one day have the kind of impact on a child that Ms. Mercado had on me to become an ESL teacher, so that we can someday not have the kind of shortage we do for children who need us most. Education is a lifelong process. There is not a day that goes by in life of an individual that something new is not learned. Teachers are just the building blocks to this process.
Each student that passes through the door of my classroom is an individual and should be treated as such. As a teacher, I have the ability to change a student's view on education and learning. This ability should be used to leave the students with a posisitvbe view on education and themselves as a person capable on learning.
