An organization is a. ".. collection of people working together in a planned, deliberate structure to achieve a common goal. Organizations are also social systems with interpersonal relationships involved in innovating, planning, implementing, evaluating and producing goals utilizing human resources" (Shelter, 2000) Organizational Behavior is best explained as the way people react and interact both individually, and as a group; and its subsequent impact on the overall effectiveness of an organization. The relationship between the two is basically symbiotic in nature, an organization could not exist without people and people participate in an organization in order to provide themselves with income, sense of accomplishment, social opportunity and other benefits, both tangible and intangible. The study of behavior in organizations is nothing new but it has become a more prominent tool as the landscape of business has evolved over the past 20-30 years.

Corporations now view organizational behavior as a vital ingredient in the development of a successful organization. Whereas our parents probably worked for companies that placed value primarily on an employee's hard skills today's companies see merit in a persons soft skills and encourages development of those skills. A balance of hard and soft skills within an organization allows employee's to work harder and more efficiently and provides the client a well developed and marketable product. The primary areas of interest to Organizational Behavior are job performance and job attitude; monitoring of these variables can provide valuable information and insight to the overall mind set of the employees. Indicators such as absenteeism, turnover and decreased productivity can be early signs of impending problems which may lead a company to falter or collapse. It is in these indicators that we see the real value for companies to study Organizational Behavior, when an employee's self-esteem is high it motivates them and keeps them personally committed to the companies goals.

Likewise, if morale and self-esteem fall the company will follow suit and suffer as well. The end purpose of Organizational Behavior should always be to build better relationships amongst the people of the organization. This can be accomplished by taking the knowledge gained through observation and utilizing it to better understand the diversity in your workforce, how they interact amongst themselves and managers and to develop tools and contingency plans for dealing with them in critical situations such as down-sizing or mergers. Learning from organizational successes and failures is paramount to a managers ability to effectively oversee his division, by seeing the dichotomy of his / her work force and understanding its diversity they are in a much better position to develop an appropriate leadership style and create an action plan which will benefit the company and its employees as a whole.
