The 1950's were a time of tremendous change in America. The government had much to do with this period. Senator Joseph McCarthy was very important to the 1950's. Joseph was party of the Republican Party and he was a heavy drinker. McCarthy was completely anti-communist. He was very popular with the press.

He felt as if communist equaled disloyalty. If he felt as if a person was favoring the communists, he would give them a court subpoena. His actions were known as the Red Scare. Many significant court cases took place during this time as well. In 1892 in Ples sy vs. Ferguson, the Supreme Court decided that there would be separate but equal places and rules for African-Americans and Caucasians.

In 1954 in Brown vs. Board of Education, the courts decided that separate but equal was not entirely equal. This was a very important court case to the African-American community. Rosa Parks was an important civil rights leader in America during this time. Rosa parks worked as a tailor in Montgomery, Alabama. She rode the bus home from work. During this time, African-Americans' were forced to give up their seat if a white man or women wanted to sit there.

One day Ms. Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man. For this action, Rosa Parks was arrested. Subsequently Martin Luther King Jr. started the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Explorer I was the first successful satellite launched by the United States. This space operation followed the Soviets's successful launch of the Sputnik and our embarrassing failure in 1957. In 1958, the space satellite was equipped with new technology to improve the results of the new satellite.

This new technology was developed by James A. Van Allen. They were a new type of radiation belt. He named them Van Allen radiation belts. This was the first major scientific discovery of the space era.

A great deal of music was banned in the 1950's. They were banned because parents thought the language was not appropriate for their children to be listening to. Some of the songs were suggestive. They may have also contained language that disagrees with some peoples' political beliefs. Public officials believed that these types of language led to drinking and inappropriate dancing.

In 1954 they began making sanitized, or edited versions. These forms of music were considered more suitable. In late 1955, rap music was removed outlawed. Some places today still have these strict laws on their music. The Cold War took place during this time as well.

The Cold War began in 1945, after World War II. The Americans' purpose was to overthrow the Soviet Union in fear that communism would spread into other parts of the world. Their efforts were successful and the Soviet Union was abolished. There were many stages in this war, but The Cold War was completely over in 1991 after the Soviet Union collapsed.

What was formally known as the Soviet Union is now referred to as Russia. The hydrogen bomb was the most powerful bomb on earth. It was created in a town in Russia. This bomb was also known as the Czar bomb of 1961.

This bomb was made with new equipment to improve the destruction. This bomb contained a magnetic coil, which controlled fusion. This discovery was made by T amm and Sakhara. They both received the Hero of Socialist Labor Medal for this innovation. The people of this time were extremely concerned that they might be hit by a hydrogen bomb. Accordingly, government pamphlets were created to help prepare people for the unthinkable.

These pamphlets were extremely over exaggerated. They often times criticized the governments'. Most people ignored them, although there were many that did not. They supposedly helped its' readers build and plan their live so it was safe in case of a hydrogen bombs.
