Summer Without Boredom example essay topic

439 words
This summer, while other people were stuffing their suitcases in direction for far-away / exotic /exciting places, I stayed in good ol' West Windsor and tried to not get bored. My routine stripped down to the core consisted of reading, practicing the piano, working, and eating ice cream. Amazingly I did not get bored. And if I did, then, I didn't notice it. Because what is a summer without boredom?

Spending a whole summer without going past the boundaries of New Jersey is not the end of the world, as I have lived to tell you so. There were times when I was not bored, of course. My summer commenced with SAT classes, which came along with tests, homework and paying attention, things that people are not thrilled about doing in the summer. I worked as a cashier in a supermarket, and stood on my feet for hours at a stretch, saying to every customer in the most obsequious tone I could fake, "Thank you for shopping at Super fresh!" I went camping, and slept in a tent with two inches of water on the bottom, while the rain fell in sheets and the thunder and lightning madly pounded away. I played with my baby brother, changed his diapers, took him out on walks, and was splattered with baby food while feeding him. I went to Six Flags Great Adventure, ate cotton candy, rode roller coasters and screamed.

But the best part of my summer, the part that I get to experience only every eight months, the thing that tells me I am in summer mode, was when I did absolutely nothing. I sat under the stars, drank lemonade and watched a bug commit suicide by flying into the flame of the citronella candle. I read Gone With the Wind in my pajamas, heard the fait hum of the lawnmower and thought that maybe I should do my chores soon. I listened to The Beatles, wrote letters to old friends and looked through my photo albums. I made a fire in our fireplace, stuck some marshmallows on a stick and toasted them. I went to the beach, slept on the sand, soaked up the sun and was hypnotized by the sound of waves.

This was certainly one of my least interesting summers, but I enjoyed it anyways. I had time to reflect, rest, and renew myself. For once I did not feel that time was my enemy. After this experience, I can truly testify that Boredom is a virtue.
