The Piece Of String By Guy De Maupassant example essay topic

275 words
In this paper I will attempt to describe the mirror of life between Guy de Maupassant and his written work, "A Piece of String". A "mirror of life" is when an author's life is reflected in his work. Maupassant grew up in Normandy in a dysfunctional family. After his parents separated when he was eleven, his controlling mother raised him. The greatest influence on Maupassant's life was Gustave Finubert, who acted as a mentor during the author's young adulthood. Some pseudonyms Guy de Maupassant used when writing for two Parisian newspapers were Joseph Pruner, Guy de Valmont, and Maufrigneuse.

When Maupassant was a young man, he contracted a disease called syphilis. Syphilis is an infectious disease transmitted by sexual contact or kissing. He was said to be promiscuous, which was the reason he contracted the disease. He later developed problems with his eyesight, and had a mental and physical breakdown. After he tried to commit suicide in 1892 he was locked up until he died in a sanatorium in Pass. In his story, "A Piece of String", Maitre Hauchcome went through many of the same troubles that Maupassant did.

The people of Normandy were known to be very economical, which was Hauchcome's excuse for picking up the piece of string. In a way, picking up the piece of string could be compared to contracting a disease, which in the end killed both Hauchcome and Maupassant in the end. I hope this paper has created for you a better understanding for Maupassant's life and how he reflects his life into his work..
