Why Their Conscience Is Not Their Guide? In recent years there has been a serious shift in values among our Turks and Caicos families in terms of ideals handed down to children. Have you noticed how parents are going out of their way to purchase their children the latest designer wear? Be it Fubu or Phat Farm or Tommy Hilfiger. But have you also noticed that many of these parents do not go out of their way to make sure their homework is done or that they are in fact learning something in school? Have you noticed that kids are walking around with cell phones strapped to them and some the latest model?

But have you also noticed that many of these same parents do not make sure that their children have a Bible or that they go to Sunday School or Church? HAVE YOU NOTICED HOW MATERIALISTIC AND SUPERFICIAL OUR CHILDREN ARE BEING RAISED WITH THE GREATEST RESPECT FOR MATERIAL POSSESSIONS RATHER THAN GOOD MANNERS AND SPIRITUAL VALUES? Well, I have and I am actually sicken by this shift in recent years. Tonight, I sat in a meeting and heard about the drug abuse and criminal activities among High School and College students: our future. And I questioned myself as to real fact that if our youth, our future does not realize they are the future and if parents don't realise that their kids are the future and if society on a whole continues to watch our future drink and smoke themselves into a drunken stupor and slowly poison their minds with drugs, where will we be as a people? My mother is a very community minded person always cooking for community functions and playing for community events such as funerals, weddings and church services, including playing every Sunday morning in her own Church in South Caicos.

Her mother raised her in the Church and ensured that she learnt a musical instrument. She in turn raised my siblings and to serve in any way we can in our community and she also made sure that we each learnt a musical instrument. Why am I saying this? There was a successive plan in my family not consciously I am sure but because they were raised that way, my mother and my grandmother raised their children that way.

Parents are not making the Church an important institution in the lives of their children. Who will carry on the Churches if the children are not there to carry on? Who will play the instruments when the older serving persons are no longer able or alive? Churches are today starved of young blood and leaders because parents fail to realize the importance of the Church. And as it continued in my family, what would appear a successive plan, it will continue on in the families where parents don't take or send their children to Sunday School and Church, they in turn will most likely raise their children the same way. And we each can identify families that we know like that.

Why am I babbling on about the Church? Religion acts as a conscience for many persons and it guides persons down the right path even if in a round about way, they will get there. But where there is an absence of this, we will have what presently obtains in our society: Increased use of alcohol and other drugs among our young people, increased sexual activity and promiscuity and as a result teenage pregnancy, AIDs and other sexually transmitted diseases, cervical cancer. We will have an increase in petty and serious crimes. Why? Christian and Biblical principles that would normally hound their minds and prick their consciences are absent to guide them.

How often do we say or hear other adults say, "I don know what wrong wit desk children today?" I have the answer, they are being allowed to raise themselves and they are not being instructed in the most important area of life. Our Christian heritage is not all that is being neglected or starved, but it is the beacon that will light the way in all other areas of life. Can you imagine in an age where our children are high on tv, other external negative factors society and other cultures, we have decided to let them alone and offer little to no guidance? The Church can be that needed and welcomed balance. Why are we doing this to our children? Teaching them that materialistic things: the cell phones and the hip hugging or apple bottom jeans and the short tight skirts are more important because they are the latest fashion or trend?

And mothers and fathers, please watch how your children leave your house. You are putting your daughters at risk every time they leave home in little skirts that they have to continue to pull down or that continue to ride up and tight blouses that shows more than it should or jeans pants that make your head hurt from thinking how they got into them. Not because it is style means they must wear it. If it is cheap and tacky, no name brand will lift it - it will just be expensive, cheap and tacky outfit. Who do we blame?

Do we blame the parents or the Church or the Government? I blame them all. We are handing down the wrong ideals whether by commission or omission. We are not doing our children or our country any favors by continuing in this trend. This new bling, bling concentration will be the moral death of this country if we do not nip it in the bud and get serious about child rearing and nation building. The family is a unit in society and these individual units make up our beautiful by nature country.
