In Ed O. G's, Be a father to your child, the author is giving directions of what men who have children and are not actively participating in their children's life what steps they should take to not just have a child but be a good father that their children can depend upon. The poem, y Ed O.G. describes his frustration that he has toward men who are not taking an active role in the lives of the children that they fathered. He discussed different stereotypical things that men do to justify why they are not involved in their children's lives and the author tells the reader how negative these actions are and how they can be detrimental to the children's lives in the long run. The poem not only discusses how negatively the author feels towards men who do not uphold their responsibilities as fathers but it also encourages them to correct what negative things have happened in the past and is a father to their child. At the beginning of the poem the author is telling the men who have created children that if you are not going to be a father to our children then why even take the risk of having them. The author then begins to discuss the different things that me do to women to make it feel like the child is all her responsibility and she must be the person to raise the child because a man is going to be a man regardless of what actions the women takes.

The author also tells the men that they should stop blaming the women for having a baby, and that the men should stop being stereotypical for thinking that women are being unfaithful and constantly cheating on them. The author explains that ninety percent women are truly faithful". Ninety percent represent a women that is faithful / ladies can I hear it, Thank you". The second section of the poem goes into the author's description of what things he hates for men to do when they have children with a women who is not their wife. The author tells the reader that when a man has a child, that it is not the amount of money or the types of gifts that he buys the child that matters, it's the personal time and affection that he spends with the child".

Thinkin' that money is the answer so he buys it / a whole bunch of gifts, had a lot of presents / it's not the presents, it's the presence, and the essence". Toward the middle of the second section the author begins to show more emotion as the tone changes from being more concerned and frustrated to enraged and irritated with the actions of the male gender. You can tell the author is upset with the actions of certain males because he began to describe them as fools and use negative terms. The author is becoming more enraged's he tells males that it is not right to give up on their children because it is not the parent who will suffer, but it is the children who will have the problems in the long run. The author then lets the males know that it is not necessary to be with the mother of your children to be a father to them, and that when the child gets older and has grown up that you will regret not having a role in your child's life". It will always be your child, even if she ain't witch a / so don't front on your child when you now it's your own / 'Cause of you front now, you " ll regret it when it's grown / be a father to your child".

In the third and final section the author takes a different approach in trying to reach men who have not been good fathers. The author starts this section off by telling the men to put themselves in the position of their children and see how it would feel if they didn't have a father in their lives. He tells the men that it is better to e there for the children from the beginning instead of trying to leave and then come back into the child's life and change what the mother has already established for the children". How would you like it if your father was a stranger / and then tried to come into your life and change to way mother raised ya-now wouldn't that amaze ya?" The author then tries to encourage the men that it is never too late to be a father to your children. He tells the men that if they have made a mistake that it is better to just fess up to what they have done and thy to change for the better, but that it is not good to put down the child's mother if they have someone else in their life or if the another man is dong the job that you should have been doing as the father". When your wrong, your wrong, it's time to make a correction / Harrassin' the mother for being with another man / But if the brother man can do it better than you can, let him, don't sweat him duke".

Again at the end of the poem the author reiterates that it is never too late to take an active role in your child's life. The commonality that the author uses is that he states at the end of each fifteen-line stanza the thought " Be a father to your child". This poem not only discusses an issue that is very common in our society today but it also gives a wake-up call to all the young men in our society who are not being fathers to their children. This poem " be a father to your child" by E.D.
