Subject: Nike Why I Chose This Company My interest in Nike is based on their quality and excellence of sports apparel and sports equipment. I have been playing soccer now since the age of 3. I can still remember getting my first pair of Nike cleats. These cleats went wherever I went. To me, these cleats were better than sliced bread. As a soccer player here at Clayton, I find that athlete's equipment can benefit his or her performance on the field.

Another reason for choosing Nike is because they are a world-recognized company and have such an influence on the improvement of sports equipment. Operating and Strategic Philosophies The Chairman and CEO of Nike, Mr. Phil Knight, attended the University of Oregon. He often spoke with his athletic coach Bill Bowerman about the shortage of a good athletic shoe. Mr. Bowerman then tried to create his own line of an athletic shoe. Mr. Bowerman and Mr. Knight then formed their own shoe company in 1964. Bowerman and Knight put in $300 each for their first order of 300 pairs of shoes.

They stored the shoes in the basement of Knight's father's house. They sold their shoes out of cars at track meets. In 1968, the two men formed Nike. The Nike "swoosh" was designed by Carolyn Davidson who got paid $35. In the 1972 Olympic Trials, the two men persuaded some marathoners to wear Nike. This was their first chance to advertise as four of the runners wearing Nike were placed in the top seven finishers.

When competition started increasing, Nike responded by making shoes for various other sports. Nike then introduced Air Jordan (shoe named after the famous Michael Jordan) in 1985. The Cross Trainer with the motto "Just Do It" was introduced. In 1989, the Aqua Shock, which was a water shoe, was also introduced.

With competition getting stronger, Nike opened their first Nike Town, and by 1995, the second Nike Town was up and running, being the #1 retail tourist attraction. As the years have passed, Nike has grown tremendously, and we now see our top men and women athletes wearing the "swoosh". The company believes that if they can continue to strive and make all their products top-of-the-line, they will be a company of excellence. Major Concepts.
