Their Homes As Eliza example essay topic

I was minded me own business tilling me fields and whatnot when Ollie the village idiot came pouncing over yelling out this and that nonsense. When he finally made his way over he was all out of breath and I thought his head might just pop off of his bloody shoulders. He says to me, "Oh aye there George, I uhh 'ave you 'eard about Marty and Gertrude down by the river?"Well no", I says, "the sun's only been up for n'eary half an hour."Alright mate, you don't 'ave to get all uppity on me... I was just going to tell you about 'ow Marty woke up this morning screaming an' flailing up a storm.

He found Gertrude all bubbled up with boils and all this other nastiness all over her body. She was the color of midnight, and she wasn't moving a twitch", he managed to spew between sputtering breaths. Ollie went running off to spread the news throughout the town, and I sat on me bucket of radishes thinking about poor Marty. He was telling us down by the pub about how Gertrude has been acting all funny since she came back from the marketplace yesterday. Apparently whatever sickness got to her, got her quick. With the disturbing news in mind, I decided to quit me work early and go see me dear Eliza.

When I went to get up, me pitchfork was caught on a root and when I went to pull it out, the bloody handle hit me in me nose. When me nose started to bleed all over me clothes I decided to go clean it up. On the way back to me shack, Liam and Garret saw all the nose blood on me shirt and trousers and ran away in a huff. I was confused at first, and I thought that maybe they could see the plague hanging over me head. I was scared out of me wits when I realized I could have had the disease with me this whole time. So I ran me body over to the church, if anybody can cure me of this, it could only be Father Thomas.

So I pushed open the heavy oak doors and thought that the lights of heaven would shine upon me sickened face and all the problems of me world would be gone for eternity. However, when I stepped through the entranceway, the only greeting I got were from empty pews and a vacant pulpit. Confused, I looked around for Father Thomas to no avail, I guess the Father had bigger things to attend to today, although from the look of the place, it looked like he ditched out weeks ago. I wonder if our King, knew what was besieging this English land. I started me way back to Eliza's and had to avoid stepping on a young bloke who was vomiting all over himself on the street. I started to realize that the sickness was everywhere me eyes looked, with no discrimination for young " uns or old blokes like meself, woman or man.

I wonder where this disease is coming from in the first place. Is it from the Italians, doing all that trading with all those strange people from around the world. Could it be from the Chinese, with all their spices and strange ideas. Or could it be from the Arabs, always hiding their faces with masks, maybe to keep their germs to themselves.

I finally arrived home and was delighted to see me Eliza cooking a stew over the hearth. I swooped in behind her and she yelped, "Oh George! You nearly scared me bones out of me body! What with the plague going around like a brush fire and all, I was afraid that you... well you know... ."Oh my dear Eliza, me love for you can't be stopped by no stinking germs", I said. "But just to be safe, I don't want you to go to any marketplace like that Gertrude who just passed on".

Me Eliza agreed and were sharing a short moment of silence for our departed friends, when we were interrupted by Liam and Garret, who came crashing through our doors and were shouting, drunk and feisty. "El za, El a!! Where are yoo ou?? We 'eard ol' George is gone, so maybe if you... Oh!

George! You " re still alive?? Maybe you " re a bloody ghost! Well, we don't like ghosts in these parts now do we, Garret?" Liam sputtered.

"No, no we don't like ghosts at all, Liam, however, we do like pretty little housewives", Garret said with an insidious look in his eye. "Liam, Garret, what in bloody hell are you blokes yappin' ya flaps about in my house?" I says, while I showed them how big me butcher's knife is. "Oh George! "You ain't no ghost at all there are you? Our apologies mate, we should have realized you weren't gone for good, but with all that blood all over... well... we " re ashamed mate, we really are", Liam managed to say. I showed them both the door, and that was the last that I saw of those two rascals.

Eliza and I stayed to ourselves for the next couple of days, while we heard the screams and shouts of death and decay beyond our walls. When we would venture out for food and water, we saw how much destruction the Black Plague had done to our land. Through the survivors we heard the rest of the gruesome details. There were those that holed up in their homes as Eliza and I have done, those that went mad during the plague decided that they should celebrate their lives while they still live, indulging in drunken orgies and brawls.

Thievery is running rampant these days, thugs breaking into homes, grabbing what they please, and killing without mercy. I asked myself where Father Thomas was during this whole ordeal, and what he would do, but then I remember that he wasn't even around in the first place, and I spit in disgust. Eliza got sick, I tried to do everything I could, but I realized fast that there really is nothing for me to do. She past away quickly... but I can't say without pain, the plague causes terrible things to happen, and Eliza was not exempt from these horrendous conditions.

After Eliza was gone there was nothing left for me in life. I stopped farming, because me fields were ravaged from the flocks of starving people anyway, me only ray of light in this world has been taken away. Scoundrels have broken into me home and are rummaging through me stores of food, they look over and realize that I am still here. There is no fight, its not worth the little energy I have left. I welcome their knives, and I think of Eliza's smile as me blood flows over me eyes, and I drift off forever.
