The Minutemen and Their World. By Robert A. Gross. (New York: Hill and Wang, 1976.) To an outsider, the city of Concord is a small community that is not a fast paced place of living. It a place where average people with average jobs make a way of living for themselves. This is why many do not view Concord as a significant town. Robert Gross points out how the people of this town made an important impact in the American Revolution.
He researched the lives of individuals and got a feel for who they actually were and how they were feeling at this point in time. He researched birth and death records, tax lists, wills, and family genealogies. He pieces together a picture of a town on the eve of the American Revolution. Each person he describes is the description of an average person in an average town that one can easily relate to. These people all had their own beliefs, ambitions, and fears just as anyone would have.
They are not any different. Gross engulfs the reader into the lives of those he researched and shows how they lived their lives just like anyone in the modern age. The economy, society, and religion of this time tore people apart as well as together. Inflations occurs because of the closing of the ports. The people were constantly being watched and stopped by the British.
