Essay topic: What do you think about the presentation of the black characters in the film to kill a mocking bird The presentation of the black characters in the film, To kill a Mocking Bird, hinges on the history of slavery in the southern states of USA. The film is set in the township of Maycomb in the state of Alabama in the 1930's. Slavery was abolished after the northern states won the civil war [1961-1965] but in Maycomb black people are mostly still with out basic civil rights and are still treated as second class citizens. The film succeeds in showing the audience that the differences between black and white are only skin deep. There were two main black characters in the story but one in particular was blatantly served wrong by justice, Tom Robinson.

He was accused of assaulting and raping a white girl by the name of May ella Ewell, a crime he did not commit. But when trying to flee from the police to escape he was shot and killed. He did not even get a chance to apply for an appeal. The other black character was Calpurnia, the house maid / mother. She was not their real mother but with their real mother dying at an early age Atticus persuaded Calpurnia to act as a mother figure and support as well as discipline the two kids, Jem and Scout.

She was treated with great respect by all the house hold members. After watching the film and realising how racism can effect some one's life has made me stop and think. We all have choices in our lives and just because one person makes a stupid decision an innocent person can lose their life or be traumatized for the rest of it.
