Even Prisoners Must Have Hope" Pg. 1 According to the article, the author feels that his message is not to make prisons more miserable than they are. The author says that prison is nothing but a punishment from those with power upon those who are less powerful. He feels that if we continue to make prisons worse by cutting back on programs that there will be an all out war of violence. The author also feels cutting back on programs will not work, but by breaking the cycle of violence and offering inmates a chance to heal like a human and not heel like a dog will work. He concludes his article by saying that prisoners have a right to our compassion and understanding no matter how heinous their crimes, that they have a right to hope after they " ve done their time become welcome members in society. I agree with some points this author brings up, but with others, I am totally against.

He says prison is nothing more than a punishment from the powerful against the weak. As I see, it is a punishment but not from the strong, it is from society against. Not only against weak, strong, or impartial, it is against any individual who has broke the law. Many minorities are in prison but none of them are there because they are weak, they all chose to break the law.

So I agree prison is a punishment and it should be. To cut back on programs such as counseling and school grants to me is not headed in the right direction. Prisoners should be able to go to school so when they come back they will have some knowledge and will be less likely to go back. So I agree prison programs should not be taken away. I disagree that their will be an all out war many minorities do not go to prison and will not care if prison programs are gone.

I believe prisoners should be treated fairly, but to have compassion and understanding no way. Those feelings are left for victims who had no choice in the situation. The only hope a prisoner should get is his release date until then he should be left to think of his mistake. 2.

"Help for one" Pg. 48 According to the article they recently had a guns for therapy offer. All you have to do is give an unloaded gun to the county law enforcement who in turn receives a voucher for therapy. The article reports that in six weeks they have only received one gun. A man's family in El Cerrito gave it.

According to the article psychologist David O Grady says the lack of participation does not make the program a failure. He says even one gun is a success. It averts one potential tragedy. To me I agree with the psychologist O Grady saving 1 person makes it a success. I am sure they would have liked more people to turn guns in but still one person life is good which makes the program a success. 3.

"Firms ex- CFO is sentenced" pg 45 This article is about William Anthony Lloyd who was a top finance officer at an Anaheim Company; Lloyd was sentenced to thirty-seven months in a federal prison for embezzling eighteen million dollars. The district attorney gave Lloyd a smaller sentence because Lloyd cooperated and tried giving some of the money back. Lloyd worked for Targus Group International; he committed fifteen counts of wired fraud. The highest sentence he could have received was forty-six months but he only received thirty-seven.

Lloyd returned one million dollars and his prosecutor said that he is trying to locate more. This article makes me laugh. Lloyd stole eighteen million dollars and was given a lighter sentence because he gave one million backs, what a joke. After lawyer fees and fines, he will make out with over ten million. What a deal. 4.

"Girl suspected in Death of Brother" PG. 45 A four-year-old girl is suspected to be the killer of her two-month-old brother. The father said that when he played with his son his daughter would give him menacing looks. The motive is thought to be because of jealousy. The boy was found with skull fractures and bite marks.

Where was the parenting? This should have never happened. If the parents had paid attention this would have never happened. The father should be held responsible as a four-year-old cannot be held accountable. 5. "Leader of a Child Porn Ring faces Prison" PG. 45 A Texas man is convicted for trafficking child pornography via computer.

He received thirty years in federal prison. Some of the images were of children as young as eighteen months. Mark Bates pleaded guilty and said he used the pictures so he wouldn't go out and hurt anyone. Sad. Eighteen months old what is wrong with people? Children a year and a half is just wrong.

I don't understand how that could fascinate people. Mr. Bates must be sick, that is the only explanation. He must have mental issues. He deserves his sentence and if it was up to me, even harsher one that was placed up on him. 6.

"Amphetamines Keep Air force Pilots up" PG 47 Many people are serving prison sentences for serving and making amphetamines, but yet the Unites States Government via the Air Force is giving them to pilots who are capable of destroying large cities. It is very ironic we punish people for selling and using them, then we turn around and give them to people in our Air Force. Sounds very hypocritical, I guess as long as you have a uniform, you can use them. 7". New York Number One Scoff Law Caught on Illegal U turn" PG 27 Leroy Line on was pulled over for an illegal. A u turns, being a minor offense.

But this was no ordinary motorist; it took nearly two hours to print out his list of traffic violations, which resulted in 633 license suspensions. He was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation and driving without a license. Leroy pleaded innocent. Six hundred and thirty three suspensions, that is horrible! How can you possibly get that many? He should be banned from driving for life.

What is even more upsetting than the six hundred and thirty three is that our so-called "law enforcement" allowed that to happen. What about our DMV? What is worse, this man and his amazing amount of traffic violations or is it how easy the law made it for him to get away with it? 8. "Taylor Guilty of Fondling Woman" PG 46 Phong Tran Dinh was found guilty of sexual battery, a misdemeanor. He faces up to six months in jail.

Twenty four-year-old women say Dinh walked in during the fitting and began adjusting her dress and fondled her. What a dumb thing to do. To waste up to six months of your life to just touch a girl. What a waste of time.

I side with the law on this one no one should touch someone without permission. I think the sentence goes with the crime. 9. "New York Drug Users to get help, not jail" PG. 47 New York will become the first state in the nation to offer non violent criminals who use drugs to receive rehabilitation treatment instead of jail time.

More that 14,000 criminals a year who test positive for drugs can receive treatment. I feel this is a great idea. Drug users, I feel should not go to jail but need rehabilitation. Maybe after first offenses jail should be given, but with no violent cases, rehabilitation should be the top priority. 10. "Police to be Barred from Some Pursuits" PG. 47 Police are to be barred from pursuing vehicles that do not stop after minor infractions.

This is going to be an experimental policy for twelve months. It is intended to reduce collisions and injuries during chases. I think that this is a good idea. A lot of people and property have been hurt or damaged because of chases. To have this happen because someone broke a minor law is senseless. I think that it will lower the rate of collisions and injuries due to pursuits.

A life is worth far more than a fine for not using a turn signal. 11. "Police quiz tourist who saw Drowning" Pg. 46 Tourist who watched a woman drown at Mount Saint Michael Abby in France could face criminal charges in they didn't try to help. Merchants said dozens of tourists stood by ass the women drowned trying to save her six-year-old daughter. Police want to know what happened and why they didn't help.

They could be charged with non-assistance to a person in danger. How horrible people is it that people actually watched the lady try to save daughter and did nothing to help. They deserve the sentence if they did noting. At least alert the authorities as to what was happening, but simply doing nothing is wrong. I would like to know what it was that was running through their minds to stand by and do absolutely nothing.

12. "Prison Riot" Pg. 10 Rival gangs in Columbia clashed in a gunfight at Bogota's main prison, leaving twelve inmates dead and sixteen injured. The incident happened with 2,900 women were visiting. Most of them were evacuated after the fighting began but one hundred were trapped inside and four were slightly injured. I thought prisons over here were bad! How do inmates have a gunfight in prison?

Where did they get the guns? At least no innocent people died. Don't they do cell checks? Where were these men hiding all these weapons? That should prove that something is lacking in their system of government. 13.

"It's a crime" Pg. 10 According to the travel advisory column on Mexican tourism, the number of attacks on tourist has doubled this year to twenty a day. In the Marina Del Ray / Santa Monica area alone, seven assaults occurred every day. That is a high amount of attacks occurring. Something should be done to lower the assaults occurring. The reason behind the assaults should be evaluated. Tourism is a huge part of the economy and they should be valued.

Tourist attacks are unacceptable and if tourism lowers it will hurt the economy immensely. 14. "Brain Dead War on Drugs" Pg. 18 The author in this article feels that like alcohol, legalizing and taxing narcotics would be the best approach for our nation. He feels we spend twenty billion annually on the war on drugs but get no results. He feels that if we legalize narcotics we will save money and make even more by taking them. We will also have gangs lose a major source of income.

I do not agree with the author. In theory it sounds good but would not work. By allowing drugs to be for sale, it would be saying that it is okay to use them. Regulation of them and not having people overdose would also be more of a concern. There also, I think, would be more people using drugs than there are now, being legal would make them cheaper and more affordable which would make buying more of a drug easier.

Legalization is not the answer. We need a total wipe out of drugs. Legalizing would only show defeat in a war that we " re not losing. 15.

"New Jersey's guns must use Identity Technology". The state legislature passed a bill that would make New Jersey the first state in the USA to ban the sale of handguns not equipped with a mechanism to limit their use to owners. Gun owners fought the legislation stating that the technology is not yet commercially available. The technology would require a mechanism, which would prevent anyone but the owner from firing it. How do you pass a bill for a technology that does not exist yet? I would think that it would be out and tested and then the bill would be passed.

I don't see how the technology would work but in theory it would work good. If a crime were committed with the gun then the owner would be the obvious suspect in who did it because they would be the only ones who would be able to use it. But, on the other hand, devices would be made that criminals would be able to use to fake ownership and then we would be back to square one. Also, many guns in crimes are bought illegally which would also not make the bill effective. There are many pros and cons to this situation.
