THE REASONS FOR CONFEDERATION There are many reasons as to why the British North American colonies joined into one country. There economy wasn't doing to good and if they joined it would only get better. The U. S posed a threat to many colonies and if they decided to attack a single colony they would most likely win. Their wasn't a good government and it was believed that if the british colonies joined they would have a very strong central Government that would make changes to better Canada. One major reason people in the British colonies wanted Confederation is because the existing economy of the colonies wasn't doing so good. People believed it would get better because if they did join there would no longer be a tariff.

That is just an extra tax to get things they would share as a nation. They would no longer be competing with each other but working together and focusing on trading with other countries. It would than make the way colonies were governed change. If they achieved strong central government after confederation that would mean that there would be a chance that a railway would be built. Why was this railway so important in peoples eyes because it was dream separate colonies dreamed of. They could never afford it.

The railway meant access to places they only dreamed of reaching. In fact in time it could reach the pacific. This would also link the central colonies to the Maritimes, this would bring forth goods traveling from Europe to Halifax (instead or Portland). Land and goods on the land were another reason for confederation. The United Sates posed a threat to the Western Colonies.

They made it clear that they were more powerful and that they wanted the land, to take over the colonies. After the American civil war the U. S's army alone had more people than the british colonies combined. So having the threat of a country that could take over anytime had something to do with it. If they joined they would belong to a larger group and U. S wouldn't pose such a threat.

The governing of the colonies would also change. The governments that already existed were ineffective which lead to little structure. There were also know to be a lot of "loose fish" and they had the power to oppose to the bills they presented. This created a political crisis.

It also made the Politicians build coalition and seeing that the english and french provinces barley ever agreed on anything made things almost impossible to achieve. But the problems would be solved when the new government would make them, (French-English and Catholics Protestants), become a single government. For all the British colonies, Canada East and Canada West the topics i touched were reality for them and Confederation was the only way they saw things being fixed. Their broken economy, their crapy governments were the reasons for Confederation. It was about time those people saw a Nation come together and become one CANADA.
