Martin Luther King was a leader and spokesman for the right of African Americans during 1950's. He explained the three ways that people deal with their oppression. One of the is acquiescence where people adjust themselves to oppression, and become conditioned to it. The second way is the resort to physical violence and corroding hatred.
Violence brings momentary revolts, but never permanent peace. The third way was to quest for freedom. The way of nonviolent resistance. The story that we went over couple weeks ago " The wounds that cant' be stitched up" is an example of King's first way of oppressed people that deal with their oppression. The girl was going at her grandmothers house and her mother and her little sister and brother got hit by a drunk driver. The way that her family have had enough with the accident and they were sick, they never filled out a complaint about the drunk driver.
I believe that it wasn't easy for them to accept what happened. The 9/11 attack that happened last year here in U.S.A. was very sad, loosing so many lives, and the one responsible for all that was Bin Ladin where he walked away with out getting hurt or going to jail. I think that this example explains the violent resistance way of people that deal with oppression. The third way of oppressed people that deal with oppression is the nonviolent resistance which agrees with the person who "acquiesces" that one should not be physically oppressive towards his opponent.
For instance the sniper that has been on the news. In Virginia he kill many people for no reason. Here you go to jail if you get caught up, which he did. Killing all those people for no reason it became fun for him. Martin Luther king explains the three ways of oppressed people that deal with oppression and I think that he gives us a very good literature on how we should really act in front of other people and treat them with respect.
