Part One: Background Information and Research A. Characters Coach Yoast: he was the original coach of the Titans. He was then replaced by Herman Boone because the two white and black schools combined to become one, and coach Boone was presented the title of head football coach. Innitially Coach Yoast was going to leave the Titans all together and accept a head coaching position at another school the following year, but instead he decided to stay and be the defensive coach under Coach Boone. I think this is a great example of how dedicated Coach Yoast was to the football team, and it exemplifies how he does not let pride stand in the way of his actions.

He proved to be a wonderful as sett to the team and acted as a roll model for the other white boys joining the Titans. Coach Herman Boone: I think Coach Boone was the strongest, most courageous character in the whole movie. He not only took a team of white football players and a team of black football players and helped to unify them as a whole, but he also helped to create life-long bonds between all of them. Though he had to deal with a lot of racial and social conflict in the beginning, he worked toward integrating the two clashing sides and throughout the movie we see the two sides come together from all aspects.

Nicky Boone: Nicky was Coach Herman Boone's nine year-old daughter. She dealt with many hardships growing up because of the fact that she was black, but she seemed to maintain normalcy through many aspects of her life. Like most other nine year-old girls, Nicky loved to play with dolls and always had her hair done in nice braids and wore dresses. I think Nicky was very proud of her father and how far he had come, but didn't quite fully understand the racial barriers at the time.

Sheryl Yoast: Sheryl was Coach Yoast's daughter, and though her and Nicky were the same ages, they were nothing alike. Sheryl absolutely loved football and it was the only thing she talked about. She would even try to guide her dad on the plays she thought he should be making in certain situations. She was by his side at every football practice, game, and meeting, and obviously was very proud of her father's accomplishments. When her dad was no longer the Head Coach of the Titan's, Sheryl did not understand and innitially did not accept it. She is a very loyal and loving daughter that takes a lot of interest in football and the role her dad plays in the games.

Gary Bertie r: Gary was the ultimate leader and integrator of the football team. He helped to unify the team and would do anything for anyone, no matter what it took. In the beginning, we saw Gary conflicting with black members of the football team (especially his roommate Julius), but he quickly opens up and is the first to give all of his teammates a chance. Perhaps the saddest part of the movie is when Gary gets into a car accident toward the end of the movie and is paralyzed from the waste down. When Coach Boone arrives at the hospital, every guy from the football team is there by his side, which proves what an admirable character Gary was and how many of his teammates idolized him.
