So we fixed up a raft and said good-bye. A week later Tom and I ran out of money so we couldn't buy matches or cornmeal or any of that kinder stuff. So the next town we stopped at (by the name of Hicksville), the rain was pouring down so hard and the wind was a' howling and whooping and the thunder made you jump right out of your' pants, we tied up the raft and found a good dry place to put Jim and keep 'm hid (right under the dock where the platform reaches the land).

Tom and I started to walk up towards the town and he told me about this book he read. It was about two boys who ran out of money whilst traveling down a river so they decide to sell rocks to people telling them that they " re magic. I got the feeling that Tom was trying to come up with ideas to make some money. So I says "Why don't we jest steal some money?" And for the first time Tom agreed with me. So we stole some money from a blind man and ran as fast as we possibly could to the dock. Then we almost forgot Jim so Tom ran up to the end of the dock; went under it and told Jim it was all right to come out; we headed down the river, again.

As we got further and further down the river, we realized we were in the Indian Territory. We tied up the raft on a tree that had failed down across the river. We set up a lean-to and cut some firewood, and put it in a dry place to keep it from the rain. After we set up camp, Tom and I took our rifles and decided to go hunting.

We caught ourselves a rabbit and finger'd we best get back to camp before it got too late. When we got back to camp the lean-to was destroyed and Jim was gone. Well, it started to rain again and it was getting darker by the second. Tom looked over at me and said, "Injuns!" Page two, Peterson"I don't know". says I. "Do you have a plan, Tom?"A plan for what?"To find Jim."We don't know for survey if he's gone."Tom, Jim don't joke around like this! The ground is still pretty wet and soft, maybe we could find some foot prints."It's too dark. We " re going to have to wait until day break!"No, if we wait 'till then he could be gone and sold up the river back into slavery!

We can take a tree limb, wrap it up in some of those dirty wash rags and pour some of that whiskey you stole on it and light it on fire."Huck you might actually be gain in's ome common sense, either that or I'm a' loos in's ome! Go git me a tree branch! And, thank heavens it stopped rain in's o hard!" So Tom and I rigged us up a fine torch or two and set off looking for some Jim tracks. Well after I took about five or six steps I hear Tom holler out, "Huck! I found me some Jim tracks, or maybe some Injun tracks!" Then he comes running over to me and says, "Come on, they look fresh. Maybe we " ll catch ourselves a nice wild Jim!" So I went with him, and we walked, and walked, and walked.

We must of walked for hours. And then we both hear this crackle over toward the river on the East of us. We stopped dead in our tracks and Tom looks at me all wild in his eyes. Then we heard someone say out loud in a strong and angry voice, "Who's out there in those woods o'er yonder!" Then we heard another voice say "It's prob " ly a deer or a coon. Come back o'er here and make sure this nigger don't git away!" Well I looked over at Tom and all I could really see of him was his shadow flickering from the torch, and then it dawned on me that we need to blow the torch out before one of those men see it; coons, and squirrels, and deer don't carry torches! So I looked over at Tom again and whispered: "Hey, Tom?

If they see that torch they " re gonna shoot us, aren't they?" Tom almost jumped out of his pants when he heard me say that; quietly turned around with his back to the direction the men was in and blew out the torch. Tom was really scared, and so was I. I think that Jim knew we were there too, and that we were scared too. Page three, Peterson Tom turned around and said, "Let's go back up to camp and come back down on the river so they won't hear us and we can take em' by su " prize!" So we did and we sat down and thought of a plan to get Jim. Now, I always thought that Tom had the greatest ideas and tricks I could ever think of, but for some reason every single plan he come up with was just plain dumb! I can't say much though because I hadn't thought of a plan yet.

So then it hits me, like a whip to a horse's rear end. So I says to Tom:" Why don't we take our rifles and say we gonna shoot 'em if they don't hand over Jim?" And Tom said, "But that's so simple, all the books I've read the characters never jist said 'hand over the hostages or I'll shoot you', we have to think of some sort of plan that is decent and makes more sense!" So I says: "Tom, you go on ahead and think a' one, I'll just go fetch me a Jim by mu " self!"Oh, no you won't! Your not gonna go on any adventures with out me! Hand me my rifle. Let's go and fetch us a Jim!" So we went down to the river and walked along the shore until we saw some smoke dancing in the sky.

We slowed down a little and got our rifles ready in hand. I looked over at Tom and said: "Okay, you ready? Let's git into the water, and stay low, don't you make any noise! " Tom looked at me with this look like he was angry with me, but I didn't care any more; I just wanted to save Jim. We got closer and closer to the campsite to where we could almost hear word for word what the men were saying. Me and Tom figured they were from North Carolina and that they had robbed a bank there and were trying to get away from the authorities.

On their way down on the river they ran out of money and couldn't find a good place to get some. But they had a poster for a run away slave that looked similar to Jim, so they were going to sell him for two hundred dollars. But me, and Tom never heard them say anything about traveling from North Carolina or robbing a bank or having a poster that said anything about a runaway slave or anything like that, so we don't know for surely. As we sat on the shore we could just barely see Jim's silhouette flickering in the dying fire.

The two men had their backs turned to us and had no clue we were here. So I said to Tom, "should we sneak up on em' n' take em' by su " prize?" Page four, Peterson " That sounds alright Huck. Then jist stick em' in the back o' their heads and tell em' to put their hands in the air and not to move!" We waited a couple of moments before we figured the time was right. Then we started up toward the men, very slowly, and as we approached I noticed one of them was a bald-headed man about seventy or over, the other man was about thirty or so, and they were talking about being tarred and feathered somewhere around Pikesville.

We finally close enough to the point where we could take the two men hostage. So we did. "Stand up you nigger stealers!" said Tom in a very loud voice. "Do it slowly, and put your hands in the air!" So they did, and when they did I told them to turn around; they did. When they were facing me, and Tom I realized that theses men were very familiar looking; it was the Duke and King! My jaw just about dropped to the ground.

Well the baldhead looks at me wild and started giving me a good cussing. So Tom said: "Oh, shut up you crazy ol' fool, before I shoot ya' in the knee!" So he did. Tom looked over at me and said: "Huck, you keep an eye out on these frauds while I go git Jim."Almighty, Tom". Jim was so happy to see us, when Tom successfully untied him he nearly squeezed Tom to death. And then Jim comes running for me. Tom decided to take my place watching the frauds, and told them to go and sit over next to a tree on the other side of the fire.

So they did. Meanwhile the baldhead was still cussing and the Duke just had a wicked frown on his face. We decided to tie them up to the tree where Jim was tied up and to leave them there, but they probably would die so we told them that we would shoot them if they came near us ever again. Then we took their rifles.

Well, it was getting close to sun rise so we started to head back to our camp site keeping a close eye out for any royal frauds that might sneak up on our backs. We got back to camp, and decided that since we didn't have much else to do we could catch some sleep before the sun got too bright. So we did. When we all finally got up we cooked a breakfast of rabbit-steaks and eggs. Tom pulled out a jug of whisky and put it to his lips, when he took a large gulp his face turned blue and his eyes crossed. When he Page five, Peterson finally caught his breath, after he nearly choked to death, he couldn't talk and when he did he sounded like a little girl!

Well, after all that we decided that we should pack up and head down the river even further to the prairie and set up a new camp and go fishing. Me, and Tom got to talking about when he told me we was going for howling adventures amongst the Injuns, and he said: "Well, Huck, we got to find some Injuns first, then we can have some howl in' adventures". Well after that I felt kinder dumb and agreed with him a h under'd percent.
