Tom Walkers Case By Greed example essay topic

One Page Essay Although times have changed drastically, there is still as much greed and evil today as there was during 1727 in the folktale The Devil and Tom Walker written by Washington Irving. Tom Walker led a terrible life. He lived with his shrewish wife, and they showed no love towards each other. They plotted against one another and purposely tried to make each other miserable.

They both even sold their own lives to the devil out of greed. This situation is much like ones today. People are influenced to do things even when they don't realize that it's happening. This couple's lifestyle was a big factor on why they bargained with the devil too. Most ordinary or happy marriages and couples wouldn't have done it. Most of the time people have to actually make a mistake before they can learn the lesson from it and in Tom's case that's what happened.

It was too late when he realized he didn't want to follow through with his deal. Could all the praying in the world get you out of a pact with the devil? The sad part about life is that people will make bad decisions and they will have to suffer from the consequences of them. Despite popular belief money can't make you truly happy, and being greedy for it won't help you in the long run either. As much as times have changed there is still evil in the world and this folktale is good evidence of it and so are all the unpleasant things we hear on the news daily. In conclusion, referring back to the great Henry David Thoreau in saying "our lives are frittered away by detail" and in Tom Walkers case by greed also..
