To be an oral surgeon you have to take nine years of college; some people say that it is a waist of time, but I think that it is a reasonable amount for a surgeon because you have to learn and remember a lot of things so that you can become a good surgeon. To prepare to go to college you have to take these college preparatory classes in high school, mathematics, anatomy, microbiology, biology, chemistry physics, and physiology. An oral surgeon is someone who does surgery on people's mouths if braces cannot help them.

The difference between an oral surgeon and a surgeon is that an oral surgeon only does surgery on people's mouths and not on any other parts of the body. For instance, if someone's lower jaw were to be sticking out two inches, an oral surgeon would cut off the excess bone and place the jaw in the correct position. Also if someone would have an extra set of teeth on the bottom or top jaw an oral surgeon would remove the extra teeth and make sure that the person had all of the normal teeth. To be an oral surgeon you have to be ready to help someone if there is an emergency, therefore you do not have a lot of vacations, or your family, which can cause more stress. People might argue that you need more time with your family, and I agree with that but usually there isn't an emergency that would need you right away. When you first start in this career the salary is an average $180,000 per year.

Your salary increases as you have more patients and as you get more skilled in at what you do. Although you don't get paid as much as when you have more patients this is still a very good paying job compared to the average American salary in the year 1999 that was an average $30,200. This job gives you and your patients a lot of self-esteem, your patients feel good about the way they look after you have performed surgery on them, making you feel good about what you have done for someone because you have just helped someone feel good about the way they look. Overall being an oral surgeon is a fairly good career considering the fact that you don't get much time with your family or for vacations, you make a good amount of money and you get self-esteem by helping others feel good about he way they look.
