The Tower of Babel illustrates mankind making a name for themselves or at least trying. For the fear of being scattered all over the earth, man decides to build a city and a tower. God enforced his command to fill the earth with that of confounding languages. If man could not communicate with each other, man could barely cooperate with each other.
"Make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered all over the earth". Already a haunting fear had set in. They were conscious already of a centrifugal force that was pushing them apart so they could not live together. The fear of this caused them to build a tower and a city. The ultimate motive is expressed in these words, "let us make a name for ourselves", which has become the motto of humanity.
The tower is designed to satisfy the spirit of mankind and also to represent a fundamental understanding of the nature of man as body, soul, and spirit. It was not really for the glory of God; it was a way of channeling God by using him for the glory of man. I believe this to be a great example of our fundamental philosophy of modern society, "Don't call us, God; we " ll call you". Man had built a tower and a city in that they not be scattered over the face of the earth. But, because they built the tower and the city, they were scattered throughout the face of the earth. The confusion of tongues emphasizes that modern man often fails to realize that the divisions among man are not physical or racial, but linguistic.
Does it mean that God is afraid of man in that he will master all things and that God will no longer control man? The Tower of Babel became "The gate of God (babel)", in man's eyes, becomes confusion (babel) in the eyes of God.
