To his teammates an athlete is a hard worker, unselfish, modest, determined, and understands the meaning of teamwork. To himself the athlete is never good enough, aware that he is an example to others, the reason his team lost, but never why they won. An athlete is an amazing being. People may dislike him, but you have to admire his performance; doubt his capabilities, but never his courage; question his efficiency, but never his effort. People might be able to defeat the athlete, but never make him quit. The marshmallow athletes are the ones who do not care if they are on the team or not.
A marshmallow is soft on the outside and soft on the inside. They are out there just to have a uniform, cleats, and to say they are part of a team. Usually these types are the easiest to find not only by the players, but the coaches. These are the types who do not try hard or give a 100 percent. They do not work hard in the weight room, on the field, or in the class room. When a marshmallow comes to mind think about this type of athlete because they are soft on the inside and soft on the outside.
The jelly bean athletes are the ones that will hurt a team the most. These are the kinds that work hard in front of the coach, but lack the effort behind his back. These are the types who go out at night and are not a good role model for younger players. Once one player sees him careless about what he does then they think they can do the same and then it starts a trend. These types are the hardest to spot. The players can spot this type quicker than a coach because players will know this type on a personal level.
Coaches only know players on the field, but will eventually separate these athletes from others. This type works hard in front or behind closed doors. They give a 100 percent on and off the field. These types go to class, keep their grades up, and stay out of trouble. These types are a good roll model for younger players.

The rock athlete is the same in front of and behind his coach. All athletes need to be admired in a particular way. Just know which types are the types that need to be admired. Athletes are made of all types of people and all have different types of styles. Only that one particular athlete who wants to be successful the most will survive.
