Personal Goals I Want to Achieve as A University of Phoenix Student Shawnee qua T. Elliott University of Phoenix September 7, 2005 Personal Goals 1 Abstract The ultimate result of this paper will reflect my personal goals that I hope to achieve as a University of Phoenix student and which I have been and am trying to pursue and obtain. They are goals that I feel I need to have in life in order to survive, prosper, and succeed to higher full-filling and journeys. In this essay, I hope to convey to the reader how I am optimistically moving to reach these goals, as well as represent to the reader how one can set their mind to determine the goals that he or she needs and / or wants to reach and see that he or she can do it! My personal goals that I would like to achieve as a University of Phoenix student are naturally instilled in me. They are goals (at least most of the goals) that I strive for everyday. One goal that I would like to achieve, is to be the best student that can possibly be.

This means that I want to learn, read, communicate, be prepared for, and successfully complete as much material as I can with respect to all my course's assignments and participation throughout my entire Bachelor Degree Curriculum. I want the teachers to see and feel that I am really trying my hardest to do and excel in the learning materials presented to me; but also, that I enjoy the tasks, challenges, and completion of the assignments. The best reason that I have for enjoying the tasks, challenges, and completion of the assignments, is because I love to learn and be valuable. My mom always taught me, and I always preach to my children, that knowledge is power! This fact, (at least to me, it is a fact) having been instilled in me at such an early age, has been the driving force that has shaped my traits of inquisitiveness, determination, and motivation to seek and find answers to even just sometimes mere curiosities. For example, I may be talking with someone who says, "I wonder what the sentencing law is on a Possession of marijuana charge in New York"?

If I think a question is a good question (such as this is to me), then I will look it up to full-fill my curiosity, as well as keep that answer in my research file; which is in my head and at home in a file cabinet. Further, I feel so full-filled and important with the more I lean and know, especially when I remember most of it. I feel like I have a romantic relationship with myself sometimes when I am finding information / answers because it is like a real up-lift or potter-patter to my heart once I succeed at reaching the answers and accomplishing the mission of learning something new. When I can take that information that I have learned to help and teach others, this is even more gratifying to me.

Adding to my list of personal goals that I want to achieve as a University of Phoenix student, is the actual meeting of and working with other students, as well as teachers who are in various professions and positions. I mean it is such a life-warming and learning experience to be able to talk and receive insight and information on a variety of assistance, assignments, issues, law, topics, and whatever else may come up. For example, one of my teammates, Joe, I found to be a very helpful person who assisted me in obtaining some of the worksheets that I needed for this week's assignment. My student web page was not up until much later than it should have been, so I called all my team members to see who could assist me until my counselor helped me get on. The other team members, unfortunately, I was not able to contact. Joe, on the other hand when I called him for help, really went out of his way to help me.

First of all, he offered to print the assignments needed for this week and bring them to me, that which I couldn't let him go through all that trouble for little old me. So I asked him if he could just fax me the two of the assignments to hold me until I could either come pick up the other assignments from him, or until I could get on my web page, or until my counselor could send me the rest of them. He was so obliging and did in fact fax me the two assignments and told me that if I didn't retrieve the rest in a timely matter, that he would be glad to bring me the rest. As it turned out, I was soon after, able to get on my student web page. Just the notion of Joe being so helpful though; and so kind, gave me a chance to really enjoy a new classmate and his kind gestures. This episode is just a small example of a positive result that I look forward to being a part of in meeting, learning, and helping with classmates and teachers.

I also hope to make connections with some of the professionals that I have a chance to work with at school, so that we may keep in touch and even be able to collaborate and brainstorm at some point and / or refer clients to each other. For instance, my teacher is a police officer, who may be able to pass the word to other police officers and professionals regarding what we do in our "Success Project" at Legal Aid, which is try to assist ex-offenders successfully re-enter society. As these police officers may be re-arresting these group of people (or in place of arresting / re -arresting), maybe they can inform them that there is a program at Legal Aid that will assist them into obtaining higher education and training, as well as employment, social services, and transportation. Maybe the officers can tell these people "look, do something with your life; go to Legal Aid and let them try to assist you in getting your life back on track". This would surely at least help to reduce recidivism. Many of these ex-offenders and offenders are being arrested and re-arrested because they feel they have no choice if they are to survive.

Many of them try to obtain legal work once they have made a mistake the first time, but because of their first arrest, not enough employers want to give them a second chance. So if these ex-offenders / offenders are going to be able to eat; they may have to steal or sell drugs, is the way they see it. Something else that I look forward to in meeting my class mates and teachers, is finding out from some of them, whether or not their employers may hire ex-offenders and maybe obtain a contact name and phone number from them in order to refer my clients, if appropriate. Another goal I have while at the University of Phoenix, is to reflect a determination of strength and success to my children and have them want them to have the same desire to strive for the best that they can accomplish.

I want them to see that even though I work full time for them, regularly go to church with them, assist them with their homework (and more), that I can still have the mind set, desire, and success in obtaining and succeeding at higher education. I want them to watch me as I allot my time within the days, hours, and minutes in order to balance work, children, and school. I want my children to see that with hard work, motivation, dedication, concentration, and steadfastness, that it is almost certain that they will attain any goals they may set forth. I want my children to also see their mom walk down the graduation aisle with degree in hand (and a great big smile on her face), so that they can see the end result of all the hard work and effort that I put into reaching and obtaining my goal of achieving my Bachelor of Science Degree.

I even look forward to taking a picture with them by my side, in my cap and gown, in hopes that they will utilize the picture as a magnet to pull, push, and excel them to their goals and beyond! One of the last goals I have as a University of Phoenix student, is to be hired as soon as possible with an employer that I will retire from. First of all, the employer that I look forward to a obtaining a career with, has to be in the field and heart of helping ex-offenders re-enter society successfully. Whether it be with the Department of Justice or another agency; as a probation officer, counselor, case manager, teacher, or the likes, this is the type of employer I look forward to working with and retiring with. This employer must also allow me the freedom I need in obtaining and excelling in my particular job duties given by that employer. For example, I need to be given the time, travel, staff, and as much funds as possible in order to negotiate with outside employers to hire ex-offenders, meet with legislators to plea for better programs for ex-offenders, be able to seek out clothing and other resources for them, and more.

Detailing this goal even further, I want my employer to realize the type of person I am, as well as the type of employee that I am and will be; such as dedicated, loyal, reliable, considerate, hard-working, giving, motivated, energetic, pleasant, and trustworthy, so that he or she can feel comfortable in what I am doing and expecting them to do. In other words, I want my employer to trust in me and what I tell them I need to do, in order to accomplish their goal of assisting ex-offenders and whatever other goals their organization or company may have. Further, my goal would be to show them that I am the best employee they could ever have, by reflecting a hundred percent productivity and success outcome in everything that I do for them, as well as for our clients. Of course, I want to be recognized, respected, and paid accordingly to help ensure that I will in fact, stay there until my retirement, and live happily ever after.
