Differentiated learning is a way to enhance learning for all students by engaging them in activities that respond to particular learning needs, strengths and preferences (Wikipedia, 2002). Realization that learners vary in their readiness, interests, and learning is crucial to student success. It is very important that students of diverse cultural backgrounds have a variety of instructional strategies to foster education and learning. It is great to have a melting pot effect but at the same time everyone is different and these differences must be addressed. Understanding this point, educators then work towards mastering the same themes and skills in their classroom but utilize different content, strategies, and products to achieve the curricular goals.
If everyone is taught at the same level using the same strategies then education becomes robotic and mechanical. When put in practice, the differentiated learning classroom may appear as chaos but in reality it is a workshop like atmosphere. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator as they travel from group to group, participating with and mentoring students through the activities. The goals of differentiated instruction are to develop challenging and engaging tasks for each learner (from low-end learner to high-end learner).
The low-end learner or lower functioning learner needs different strategies and modifications then the average or high-end learner. For example, the low-end learner may need to have the content modified so that it is simplified to meet students' needs at that level. Low-end learners may not be able to attain grade-level appropriate curriculum objectives; however, all learners need the opportunity to be successful at their individual instructional levels. Average learners are typically able to attain grade-level appropriate curriculum objectives, but may need adaptations in content such as more time to complete tasks and hands on experiences to reach their full potential. High-end learners may be above the grade-level curriculum objectives and need to be provided with enrichment activities. One of the biggest problems surrounding differentiated instruction stems from teacher pre service programs.
According to Holloway's September 2000 article in Educational Leadership, teacher pre service programs do not provide students enough training or experience in utilizing differentiation methods. Instead, Holloway states that university and school based mentors advice student teachers not to differentiate instruction but to instead teach to the middle level students (Holloway, 2000). While this may be an attempt to keep pre service teachers from becoming overwhelmed, having these student teachers focus on the more basic levels of instruction can cause more hardship within their first years of teaching. With most teacher preparation programs providing only one course in student, and mentors pushing for more normalized instruction, first year teachers often step into the classroom with little understanding of differentiated instruction and few tools to combat the roadblocks on the path to implementing differentiated instruction in the real world school setting (Holloway, 2000; Scherer, 2000). Even for teachers who have a good understanding of differentiated instruction, there are many constraints within the public school setting that can halt or at least stunt the use and effectiveness of differentiated instruction practices.
One such constraint comes from the school administration. In order for differentiated instruction to occur effectively, building and district administrators must provide support in many ways. Support from administrators should include time allotted for individual and collaborative planning (Holloway, 2000). Especially in the beginning, differentiated instruction requires precise, well thought out plans, which take into account the different needs and strengths of individual students.
Many teachers see differentiated instruction as providing a few different activities for students to choose from, however, this is not what true differentiation is (Scherer, 2000). Administrators must also provide support in the form of materials (Holloway, 2000). In one given third grade classroom, a teacher may have students reading at levels ranging from pre-primer through sixth grade. This teacher must be provided instruction and independent reading materials that cover this wide range of skills so that her students are all being challenged at their individual levels. Administrators must also provide new and experienced teachers with ongoing, quality professional development addressing differentiation. School leaders must set the expectation that all teachers will differentiate instruction.
This expectation does not only positively effect students, but also teachers. The peer pressure of experienced teachers pushing new teachers to do things the way they have always been done in a building can be detrimental to creative, innovative new professionals (Holloway, 2000). Having the expectation that all teachers will differentiate will help to dissolve this kind of negative peer pressure. While it is possible for a teacher to successfully implement differentiated instruction in his or her classroom without the above supports, one can see that teachers and students will be more likely to thrive when the above constraints and roadblocks are removed (Scherer, 2000).
