Binary systems are a major factor of everyday live. As years pass the use of a binary system has changed dramatically. Throughout this essay I will explain what binary systems are, how they were used in the past, and how they are being used today. A binary system is defined as a numbering system with a base (radix) of 2, unlike the number system which has bases of 10.

Binary numbers are preferred for computer precision and economy. (Net Lingo: The Internet Language Dictionary, web) Binary code is written in a format of zero's and one's, which makes it easier to identity higher and lower currents. In the beginning of computer operation, the first personal computer (PC) built was ran in binary code. In 1975 Ed Roberts built the Altair computer that was used by flipping switches up and down which relayed binary code. Also, Morse code was a form of binary code, the difference was instead of zero's and one's the relationship was dots and slashes Today our PC's are running through processes of binary code. The information we key into the computer is translated into a binary format.

The computer takes our data and forms it into code. This allows us to use our PC's without flipping switches. When computers first came available to the public users could actually see the binary system in use. Today the code is transformed internally, and most users wouldn't have the slightest idea on how to use it. This mathematical structure of numbers has changed society, and will probably be used for quite some time.
