The world of computer-related technology has had a great effect on our lives and it is growing rapidly. Computer-related technology has helped make life easier and has helped humans accomplish many things. However, there are also a number of negative effects of computer-related technology on society and the environment. One issue associated with computer-related technology is the changing nature of work.

Computer -related technology has contributed greatly to the changing nature of work. With the use of computer-related technology, work has become easier, quicker and more efficient. Computer related technology is increasingly being used in industry. Due to factory automation, larger quantities of products are made in less time.

Factory automation means when machines are set to perform tasks automatically. This has had a great effect on manufacturing transport and communication but little effect in industries in which personal service is important. Automated assembly lines are used in factories and they " re a very efficient way of putting together large numbers of identical products such as motor cars. Using computer-aided design (CAD), a whole product or component can be designed on-screen before it is actually built. A CAD system is an electronic drawing board that is combined with a computer system that is used for the designing of a product or component. By using CAD, designs can also be tested by simulation of real-life situations.

Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) involves the programming of machines such as robots, to manufacture the finished product. Robots are machines that are programmed to carry out a range of tasks including painting, welding, assembling and trimming. Robots are capable of performing tasks that are dangerous or difficult to do. A benefit to a business from using robots is that productivity can be increased with out employing more people. A benefit of computer-related technology to employees is that new jobs have been created that involves working with computers and robots. Due to multi-skilling, the skill level of the workforce has been increased.

Multi-skilling means that employees are trained in several tasks to avoid boredom and to make them more employable. Banks are now largely computerised and it is likely that the use of computers in banks will increase even more in the near future. An example of computer-related technology used in banks is an automatic teller machine (ATM). ATMs provide convenience because people can readily withdraw money from their bank account, using a credit card, even when a bank is closed. Due to ATM machines, banks are employing smaller numbers of tellers. EFTPOS, which stands for electronic funds transfer at point of sale, allows customers to pay for their purchases using their plastic ATM cards.

Money is transferred directly from the customer's account to the shop's account. These ATM cards have magnetic strips containing information such as a personal identification number. Computers read this information. Some benefits of EFTPOS include convenience, safety and the speed of the transaction. Credit cards can be used to buy a range of goods and services.

They are accepted in retail stores, restaurants and airline offices. They can be used to pay bills such as electricity, water and phone over the telephone. Computer-related technology replaces paper work with electronic work. Computer-related technology assists offices in sending and receiving information such as e-mails and facsimile, changing and processing information such as printers and calculators and storing information such as databases and floppy disks. From the use of computer-related technology in offices, convenience is created and work is done with greater speed and efficiency. Although computer-related technology has benefited the nature of work in many ways, there are also a number of disadvantages.

The introduction of computer-related technology in industry has caused a large reduction in the number of jobs available and an increase in unemployment. Besides making some workers redundant, computer-related technology has also affected workers by making their existing work skills useless or of little use. This is known as deskilling. Computer-related technology in workplaces has also led to the loss of job satisfaction because most of the responsibility rests with a computer or machine.

Employees have less chance of making decisions and their work becomes uninteresting and routine. Other disadvantages of the use of computer-related technology in industry are the costs of machines, the cost of electricity and the errors that machines may have. A negative impact of computer-related technology in banks is the possibility of electronic fraud. There is the danger of people entering a bank computer and transferring money. Another possibility is a dishonest employee defrauding the bank or its customers.

The use of credit cards makes it easy to overspend. Other disadvantages of credit cards are goods can be charged to a person's account by someone else when they are stolen and that it is risky to give credit cards numbers to sellers. As computer-related technology continues to grow and change in the future, there may be larger rise in unemployment because more machines would be replacing employees. When artificial intelligence is developed, robots would be able to perform human thinking and be able to perform a wider range of tasks. Advances in computer-related technology may lead to a cashless society in which coins and notes are not used.

More computers may be used in banks to prevent criminal activity. Voice recognition technology, fingerprint scanning and iris-recognition are being tried out so that account holders may be identified by more than just their signature. Office work might be done by robots in the future. The technology used in offices might become smaller and portable. Computer-related technology has certainly affected our lives and made a great impact on society. As it continues to grow, many other changes will occur and a widely computerised society would develop..
