The Second Amendment states " A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed". Meaning the original purpose of the Second Amendment was to preserve and make sure, not grant the pre-existing right of individuals, to own and bear arms. Although the amendment promotes the need for militia, membership in any militia let alone a well regulated one, is not held a countable to exercise the right to have, and bear arms. A person does not have to be in the militia to keep and bear arms. The militia is one reason to, but not the only rationale for preserving the right. U.S. vs. Cruikshank involved individuals of the Ku Klux Klan, taking away the black victims basic rights such as freedom of assembly and to keep and bear arms. The court decided neither the First or Second Amendments applied to the states, but were restraints on congress.

So the Federal Government had no power to correct these violations, the citizens had to rely on police power of the states for protection from private individuals. This case is misunderstood or quoted out of order by saying, Cruikshank held the Second Amendment which does not allow a right to keep and bear arms. The court also said this about the First Amendment. The court stated that "these rights weren't granted or created by the constitution, they existed prior to the constitution. Why not ban handguns? I mean aren't they made for one purpose to kill?

Further more, "Handguns are used in over 55% of all murders, so wouldn't banning guns be a no-brainer? Wouldn't thousands of lives be saved?" Setting aside any advantages that may accu re from handgun ownership, handgun only bans could still lead to more deaths. "A National Institute of Justice survey of felons in state prisons found that 72% of felons who used handguns said they would switch to sawed-off shotguns if handguns became unavailable". This means fewer attempts of murder with firearms, but more murder victims will be the result. Shotgun wounds at point blank are much more fatal than handguns wounds. "Shotgun injuries have not been compared with other bullet wounds of the abdomen as they are a thing apart... at close range they are as deadly as a cannon."At close range, survival is rare".

Instead of passing more gun control laws that may be detrimental to law-abid in citizens, the evidence suggests that we can reduce gun violence by enforcing the laws we already have, or by banning handguns and firearms. While Christianity is not a militant religion, and Christians are not to live by the sword, this doesn't mean live with out weapons. The Bible says that individuals have the authority to have weapons, and protect their family. Those who are armed also repel those who would do evil (Lu 11: 21-22). Aside from this the Second Amendment has little to do with personal self-defense. I think that the widespread rivals to gun registration reflects the deeply ingrained American idea of checks and balances.

"Handguns have become a plague to our society that absolutly must be cured". Handguns are easy access in the U.S. and has proven to be extremely dangerous. "Since 1960 more than 1 million Americans have died from handguns". In the 90's there was one of the worst cases of handgun tragedy's seen in the entire world. There was more than 1 person killed by a fire arm every 5 minutes. It's time to stop this.

Handguns account for less than 35% of all guns in America but close to 70% of all firearm deaths in America. Handguns are the choice for suicide, homicide, and the likelier weapons to injure or kill in accidental shootings. Over the past 10 years more handguns are being produced than ever before, as well as more fatal handguns, more concealable, and cheaper handguns. 1 out of every 4 handguns is used in a crime in America with in 10 years of being made. "Over 3,500 students were expelled in 1998-99 for bringing guns to school, of these 43% were in elementary or junior high school". In 1997, guns were used in 17,566 suicides, compared with the 13,522 homicides.

I think that handguns should be baned along with firearms because they get in the hands of the wrong people to easy. Handguns are a nuiecence to society they bring death, they are like a plague, so many kids lose their lives. Violence is trigger and a handgun is brought in, if they were baned then the death toll would go down. My girlfriends dad (owns a 350 magnum) thinks that by taking away hand guns we they are taking away your safety, and creating chaos, But let me ask you this by having handguns isn't it proven to be chaos?
