Vampires Los Muertos Final Draft Sexually transmitted diseases are becoming more and more widespread throughout the world more now then ever. Everyone is aware of them but it still doesn't stop people from having sex. Efforts of advertising contraceptives, abstinence, and sex education have been effective in an attempt to slowing down the spread of STDs but the numbers are still high. STDs and Aids weren't even considered major epidemics until the mid-80's.

People could enjoy sexual intercourse and activities with numerous partners and not have to worry about diseases, using condoms (except for the prevention of pregnancy) or having to go to clinics to be checked for STDs or HIV. As years passed STDs and Aids began to spread at an alarming rate. More and more people worldwide began to be aware of this new concern and it worried and scared many as well. The spread of STDs and Aids combined with kids beginning to engage in sexual activities and intercourse at earlier ages has lead to the culmination of sex education seminars, information packets, and pamphlets given to students as early as elementary school, specifically the 5th grade.

It is visible in this movie that Vampires act as a representation of the people in the world with a sexually transmitted disease and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Both are parasites or viruses in the human body that can't be rid of until death. There are medicines now and more are being created to aid or help control the outbreaks but once someone gets it, they are stuck with it. Also, both are spread from person to person either unknowingly or forcefully.

This movie shows how the victims didn't even know the vampires were vampires. A lot of the victims in the movie didn't even know they were in the same room with a vampire. They looked just like everyone else, walked like everyone else, dressed like everyone else and talked like everyone else. The best way to detect them in the movie was through the use of a thermal imager by Bon Jovi. The thermal imager showed how a live body emits heat but when a vampire was viewed in the imager, no thermals or heat was emitted because the vampires bodies are dead or better yet, undead. Little did the victims know what they were about to get into.

Once bitten or scratched, the victims became infected. Paralleling real life, a person could encounter another person with a STD (a vampire) and see that they looked normal and not see any physical symptoms or signs of an STD. From another perspective, it is possible for a person with an STD to encounter a person and become sexually involved with them with out them even knowing they had a disease. When hunting or ritualistically choosing their prey, vampires don't announce, "Hey, I'm a vampire!" If they did, their prey would run. In real life, a lot people infected with an STD or Aids won't announce, "Hey, I'm infected!" and are so desperate for sex, they won't tell their potential partner they are infected, if they did, that person would run. In other cases, the infected person won't even try to engage with another unknowing partner in a humane manner, they will just force them selves onto them and rape them.

The same goes for vampires with their victims. They will either seduce them and then attack them when they aren't ready for it, or they will just jump out of the shadows and attack. Just like there are different types of STDs and strands of the Aids virus, there are also different types of vampires. To illustrate, here are a few examples. The traditional Draculian vampire is the one that everyone is accustomed to; turns into a bat to fly when it wants or needs to fly away, doesn't like garlic or crucifixes and has no reflection in mirrors.

(Atrice, 2003) The Nosferatu clan vampires live in the sewers and have a deformed appearance. (Qu Studios, 2003) Another example is the Ricean vampires that have a more normal looking appearance. They don't wear the 'Count Dracula' cape and say, "Blah, blah, I want to suck your blood!" They have a normal human figure but their skin is pale, their nails are like glass and need blood each night to grow stronger. (Atrice, 2003) Fire, sunlight and decapitation is the only way to kill them. Another type of vampire is the Martinians. This species of vampire doesn't drink as much blood as others but when they do, they consume alcohol as well to magnify the effect that the blood gives when drank.

Unlike the others mentioned, they can be out in the middle of the day in sunlight. In addition, they pretend to eat but it serves no real purpose to them. Their body is dead so why would it need vitamins and minerals? Another interesting fact about Martinians is that they can have sex. Most likely with their victims before they consume them, Ricean vampires are not capable of doing this. (Atrice, 2003) The most common vampire is the Vampyre, or that's what most vampires claim to be.

A vampyre is a soul that travels from body to body. It overtakes one body and stays within it until that body ages and ultimately dies then moves on to another body. It has many human traits, it falls subject to the aging process, is mortal, eats and sleeps, and when in the mix of things, is almost impossible to detect as a vampire. This species of vampire does not feed on a daily basis but only one to two times a decade. (Atrice, 2003) Not all vampires feed on blood though. There those who feed on others life force.

They utilize seduction, charm, and charisma to get close to their victims then when the time is right, they don't drain the victim of their blood, but of their life force to survive. How does one become a vampire? Just like our first guest speaker said in class about how someone becomes a monster, one becomes a vampire through penetration. (First guest speaker from class.) The traditional vampire sucks blood through one of the main arteries in the neck by penetrating the skin with their teeth, or traditionally, fangs, some vampires like the Martinians may use a more sexual approach and penetrate the artery that runs down inside of the legs close to the groin while seducing their victim. Even in some cases through the penetration of the skin on the penis like one of the characters from the movie.

In addition, one may also become a vampire by being scratched. People obtain STDs and Aids in the same fashion, through penetration. One may obtain an STD or Aids through sex by vaginal, anal, and oral penetrations. Also, they can be spread through the penetration of skin by needles from blood transfusions, unsanitary piercing, tattoos, and sharing of needles with drugs usage. Not to mention through a cut in side of the mouth, on the lips or on the tongue when oral stimulation is exchanged with partners who are infected. Just like some vampires are hard to detect, not all STDs are easy to detect.

Not every STD is visible at first; one can be a host of a STD and spread it to others before any physical or visible symptoms can be detected with the naked eye. Another common bond with vampires and sex is the fact that people parallel blood with semen. In sexual intercourse or activities with STDs and Aids, semen and bodily fluids are exchanged. With an exception to the vampires that can be out during the day like the vampyre or the martinians, most work or prefer to work at night. They have been traditionally called, "creatures of the night". (Marie, 2003) It can unarguably be said that most STDs and Aids are spread at nighttime.

Its dark out side, most people go to sleep with another person, go out on dates to dinner at this time then come home to get some action, and prostitutes are at full strength. It's almost impossible to drive down Orange Avenue in Orlando, Florida and try to pick up a hooker in broad daylight opposed to going out when the sun comes down. Both prostitutes and vampires hide and work in the shadows. Traditionally in almost all vampire movies, the victims are taken at a young age. Which may be an explanation for why the leader of the vampires in this movie was in fact, female. On the whole, this movie is an excellent interpretation of the ties between vampires, STDs and Aids. It shows how the viruses were mostly spread in the evening time when it is dark, the victims were of a young age and received the disease or virus unknowingly or forcefully.

Is there hope for the future? Of course there is; for every problem there is a solution, in most cases. Just like there are vampire hunters there are people in the world who are trying to find a cure for STDs and Aids and there are even more people in the world trying to spread the message to a young audience of having safe sex by the utilization of contraceptives, waiting to have intercourse or engage in activities until an older age and even waiting until you are married. They also spread the message of monogamy and ultimately the best defense for the spread of STDs and Aids is abstinence.
