La Vaughn is 14 years old and she attends ninth grade. La Vaughn lives a suitable life with her mother. They live in a poor part of the city; however their life is very adequate. La Vaughn is a good, serious student. She tries very hard in school because she hopes to attend college.
Unfortunately, La Vaughn meets many problems when she gets her babysitting job. She is unable to keep up in school and she starts getting low grades. La Vaughn seems to be a good person to be with. She seems to be nice and she's caring for sure. It really shows when she gets a job as a babysitter. La Vaughn hopes to get into college, but because of the financial problems she may have to face, there is a little chance.
To get into college, she needs a job, quickly. La Vaughn sees an ad for a job and she hopes this is a beginning... Unluckily La Vaughn's job is not what you'd call a good job, not even a tolerable job for child especially. The atmosphere is horrible. The house is a mess. It is well described in this passage".
Here's how it is at Jolly's house: The plates are pasted together with noodles and these rooms smell like last week's garbage" (pg. 23) Everyday, after school, La Vaughn comes to Jolly's house and watches her kids, Jeremy and Jilly until Jolly is home. Some days it even means to stay overnight. Jolly is very lucky that La Vaughn has a good relationship with the kids and feels bad for them. La Vaughn is continuing to work hard even though this job is putting her grades down and wasting her time. La Vaughn seems to have improved her relationship with Jeremy, who didn't really accept her in the beginning.
