Persuasion originates from the Greek pathos, also called pathetic or emotional proofs, "is the persuasion of audiences by using emotions" as defined by the Greek philosopher Aristotle. In media has been defined as "the co-production of meaning that results when an individual or a group of individuals uses language strategies and or visual image to make audiences identify with that individual or group". These two definitions make clear that in order to be persuasive we must appeal to the ethics, emotions and reasoning of our audience. Aristotle described two different types of persuasion in his book "Rhetoric".
One is not technical an use whenever available, witness, torture and contracts (this type shows how barbaric the Greeks were sometimes) and another invented by the speaker by using an ethical and reasoning appeal manifesting the inner thoughts in the speech. "Logos, pathos and ethos are completely different, yet, they are correlate. Ethos moves an audience by proving the credibility of the re thor, pathos stimulates the feelings of the audience and seeks change in their attitudes and actions; and logos, along with ethos and pathos, mobilizes the power of reasoning" (Covin o & Solliffe 17). This cognitive process has a very idealistic fleur when explain though Aristotle's eyes and one have the hope of been persuade for philanthropic motives, sadly as an everything else where there is a monet arial gain, these three tools of persuasion tend to be used for commercial and political purpose.
A good example would be the popular Apple computer's campaign "Think different". The campaign was based in the used of heroic figures like Gandhi and Dalai Lama to sell computers. Another example would be the advertisement of Wrangler jeans in 1986. A billboard with a doll-like fetus, floating in a blank, uttering-shaped void.
The message was clear: Born to shop, more specifically to desire the perfect pair of jeans that it makes feel as safe and warm as when we are in the womb. Louis Cheronnett (1927) said about advertisement: "Advertising is in some way an elastic gas, diffuse, perceptible to all our organs... But we have not been aware enough of its beauty, latent, profound, scattered, spontaneous... the first domain of advertising was the street... Now it surrounds us, envelops us, it is intimately mingled with our every step, in our relaxation, and its atmospheric pressure is so necessary to us that we no longer feel it" This quotation appeals to our reasoning and makes us think and realize how free less we are and the feeling is suffocation to the point that is ethically correct no to feel the persuasive pressure of marketing because is not necessary anymore, is part of our skin. To illustrate persuasion in politics, I am attaching a poster made in 1942 by the U.S. government based in a study run from them that showed the images of women and children were very effective in terms of persuasion.
It was wartime and propaganda was used in both sides of the conflict, but regardless how manipulative and horrific the American's propaganda was, they were the "good ones" and the Germans the terrible enemy. Also the right combination between image and wording has been proving an effective factor in persuasion as showed above or just each element by itself could be as powerful as combined. For instance, we use an irony, as a polite wounding that can be unintentional whereas sarcasm is a form of irony that is intended to hurt or offend, or a very common form of persuasion in politics is the use of periphrasis, a double talk, and pedantic language in order to dodge an issue or question. And to mention just one more which we are very familiar with, yielding a point in order to win one. Language is a very effective factor of persuasion because it works primarily on logic and is very much related to the meanings of the words. In conclusion, persuasion is part of our way of leaving, it goes wherever we go influencing everything we do or say, marking our relationship with others, even those we love more (those more than anybody else) but this knowledge can be use in a very positive way, not just for a manipulative purposes, instead persuasion has the power of taking us anywhere we want to go, by communicating ourselves more effectively transmitting what exactly we want to say and then see the truly I and what we want to do in life and who we are and then this will provides us with the ability to help others to do the same for themselves..
