Very Positive Motivational Speaker example essay topic

August 27, 2003 was the day that convocation was supposed to get everyone pumped and inspired for the beginning of the school year. To me the convocation was another assembly. It was held in the Thomas Field House Gymnasium, and almost all of the space was filled. Going into this assembly my expectations were high.

I sort of imagined it as a pep rally or graduation speech, where it would get us ready for the first semester. In the convocation there was a speaker that went by the name Dr. Guin "Guy" Bluford. Dr. Guin " Guy" Bluford was selected in the first class of space shuttle astronauts in 1978, and was the first Africans American to fly in space in 1983 aboard the space shuttle challenger. Three significant roles of that Dr. Bluford played were; he became an aerospace engineer, taught student how to fly, and also participated in space business as an astronaut. He also made goals and followed through with them. He also aimed high and followed through with any goals that he put himself to.

He accomplished many things in life and was a very positive man, but his monotone voice didn't really express that. Actions speak louder than words, and to me it didn't seem like he was as proud of his accomplishments as he should have been. If his pride would have shown more through his voice, than maybe people would really take his advice into consideration. If I had a choice to attend the convocation my choice would have been to study, but I had to fill out a questionnaire for my Learning Strategies class.

Therefore it was mandatory. In spite of all the critiquing that I have done, I could remember three basic important things that he has stated; "Do what you love and love what you do,"Aim high,"Don't be afraid to challenge yourself and learn new things", and "If you can dream it and believe it you can achieve it". Those three statements made a lot of sense to me. I can now remember his words and actually apply it to my own life. After the convocation was over, ice cream was served in the tent located in front of Russell Hall. Me, being the hungry woman that I am decided to get two separate scoops of vanilla and chocolate ice cream.

Many of our classes had discussions about the convocation afterwards. Some students felt like Guy was a very positive motivational speaker and others like myself opposed. I guess my expectations for the speaker was high, because my high school brought in some of the most experienced motivational speakers they could find. This lady that spoke at my school spoke on the radio and I noticed her voice in an instant. After she spoke she made you believe or reconsider, but with Guy I couldn't do that. It seemed like he was just walking through the motions.
