Today we come across incidents and scandals where we find out that religious figures are not as pure or holy as society assumes them to be. This is what the society in the age of the Hundred Years' War thought of Joan of Arc. Or at least the small part of society that wanted nothing more than to ruin her reputation as the messenger of God. "The Maid", or Joan of Arc, posses' characteristics that contradict this small part of society's expectations of religious figures in this time period. Throughout this story of Joan of Arc, her vision is seen as a mission to be the messenger of God. Among those missions, she was to raise the siege laid to the city of Orleans against the enemy who was Great Britain.

At first Joan of Arc had trouble interpreting why she, a young woman, brainless in how to lead combat, received such a task. Having this vision from the voice that she kept hearing, she followed through with it. Another vision was to lead the French King to Rheims for his coronation. When she arrived in Chinon to tell this to the King, the council was weary on whether or not to believe her.

But I think that the King found out that he could learn things from Joan of Arc. I think that she had more of compassion towards people and certain characteristics of higher christianity since the voice found her. The king viewed her visions as tender helpfulness. Only a certain number of her inquisitors didn't like Joan of Arc. They were the part of society that thought her mind was working in devilish ways. These were the judges in the trials that for the most part thought this.

Other inquisitors loved Joan of Arc. These were the French people who thought of her visions as spiritual wonders sent from God to only help society. Especially after a stunning victory over the English. After being interrogated, the judges accused her of violating social and religious norms and breaking the rules to the church in order to ruin her reputation. So by the time of her trial, she got so exhausted from prison that she even admitted that the voices she heard were not from God.

She even signed an abjuration to verify the wrong in what she had done and believed. From reading more about Joan of Arc, I got the impression that part of society who was most concerned with ruining the reputation of Joan were the judges; who were a panel of theologians. They tried different ways to try and frame her, while in prison. One of the first clues to this impression comes from reading about when it says, "the judges cast doubt on the divine origins of Joan's visions".

She was then captured and interrogated. This seemed odd because Joan was considered a hero to many. The next evidence comes when the judges accused her of disobedience in certain ways of the church and by violating rules by wearing men's clothing. From those statements made by the judges, I got the idea that they were just trying to stop somebody possessing a personality of such a church figure holding such a power to be God's messenger.

Maybe being scared that Joan would be looked up to as being more powerful than the judges themselves. The whole trial and everything was set up just to put an end to Joan of Arc. By reading the character of Joan's description, we would normally assume this to be a good and caring person. But I guess that the judges thought differently. The overall view of Joan of Arc was portrayed as just a regular class individual. She was a church moral with powerful views.

Her views were powered by the voices she said she heard thrice a week. It was in her mind to be an angel from God that was to lead her in a new lifestyle, in being the messenger of God. She inspired a wide range of responses in her trial. She was a leader of the people for whom she trusted and for whom the visions she had.

Joan was confused from her time of arbitration and trial because she had a troublesome time while in prison. Her responses were in such a wide range because she wanted to continue what she had done for God, but then she also wanted to save herself while at trial to try and convince the judges that she wasn't powered by God's word. She was just confused. Joan of Arc had many people like her because she was a woman war leader, and looked up to for possessing such bravery.
