In this age of growing dependency on computers, and more specifically, the Internet, to accomplish daily tasks, personal privacy online has become an increasingly important issue. Internet users expect everything from the web sites they visit to the software they run not to infringe upon their privacy, which unfortunately is not always the case. The increasing frequency of these occurrences signifies a disturbing trend. In movies such as "The Net", "Enemy of the State" and "The Matrix", various cases of extreme interference in people's privacy are shown.

If nothing is done to curb this problem, the cases, which are lives being altered by private individuals and government, identities being crushed, and being led to believe lies, shown in these three movies may become unexpectedly plausible in the near future. In one of the three movies, "The Net", Sandra Bullock's character's privacy was violated and altered by private individuals. Everything about her was found out through computer programs, and because of this, her identity was wiped out. These criminal individuals were able to change anything and everything in her life from her personal details to her police records. Her location could be tracked down at anytime and she was always being watched.

The way her live was invaded was not acceptable in anyway. What was done to her was illegal and overall, an extremely cruel game. If this were to happen to someone besides this character, it would have not gone as far because the character knew no one and had no proof to prove her real identity. Most people know someone in their city and can prove who they really are. Bullock's character was lucky that she knew computers well and could reverse what was being done to her. Some people don't always know how to reverse what happens to them, technology-wise.

In the second movie, "Enemy of the State", Will Smith's character's privacy was invaded by the government, rather than by private individuals. He was believed to have a secret tape in his possession, and the government was willing to go to any lengths to track it down, even if it meant killing him. This was also just as unacceptable as the last occurrence. I believe that having the government violate your privacy and having private individuals invade your privacy are equally terrible. I don't think one is worse than the other because both outcomes are still the same; lives are being altered, illegally.

The person's rights are violated because they are having their privacy desecrated. As I said before, violation of privacy is still a violation of privacy. One way of violating privacy is not going to be better or worse than another. In "The Matrix", we are led to believe that we live in a virtual reality, and it is just as bad as the other two cases. We shouldn't be led to believe anything but the truth, and we shouldn't have our whole lives at stake by having parts of our identities online the Internet or as part of programs. Privacy online needs to be improved and safety and security online needs to further be pressed for World Wide Web surfers.

The Internet needs to be regulated more carefully to insure that no one's life or identity is risking violation. In conclusion, no matter which way a person's privacy is violated, it is still being violated. It doesn't matter if private individuals or the government is invading your life, because your life is still being invaded illegally, without your permission. Everyone has the right to live freely and should not be a victim of this crime. Hopefully if people are aware of these situations, they can learn to better prevent it when surfing the Internet or using mysterious programs.
