Web Site For Caribbean Mist example essay topic
In this report we will analyze and contextualize our team's field research so that we can give recommendations for a web site that meets the standards of Caribbean Mist. After looking over what we had gathered from our research we began to see what Caribbean Mist is looking for in this web site and what restrictions and standards you are forced to comply with. The report provides recommendations for advertising for the web site, web site design, where to host the web site, and the context on the web site. Each recommendation is well stated and provides descriptive steps or actions, supported by research, that the company must perform in order to fulfill the recommendation. Along with the description, we will provide a rationale on why the option we chose will best suit your needs. Lastly, each recommendation presents Caribbean Mist with a step by step procedure of what needs to be done and how long it will take.
To assist Caribbean Mist with our recommendations, we have also included a cost analysis of each recommendation that is given so that you will know exactly how much each step will cost and how much money will be needed to get the project started. Analysis Our team executed a number of things to produce our recommendations. We did field research, an interview, and market research. Our field research consisted of an in-depth observation of Caribbean Mist while they were open for business.
This gave us a better idea of what types of customers come into Caribbean Mist and how often. We also conducted an interview with the manager to get a better idea of what Caribbean Mist wants in a web site. We conducted market research by examining other tanning company web sites to see what is popular in the industry. The field research that was completed gave our group a feel for Caribbean Mist and how the establishment is run. We took pictures of the business so that we could get a better visualization of the company. With these pictures incorporated into your web site, customers can get a much better feel for the company by being able to see the inside and outside of it.
The unique atmosphere that Caribbean Mist offers will also be portrayed through the web site. In the field research we were also able to analyze documents that Caribbean Mist has on display for customers which provide them with information on tanning, lotions, and other services that they provide within the store. This information will also be used in designing the web site and illustrating the wide variety of services you provide. The interview that was conducted proved to be a valuable tool for determining what the needs are for your company. We learned that many different types of customers come into Caribbean Mist giving us an idea of how to market the web site. From this, we were able to break down the customers into three main groups.
These groups are college students, high school students, and adults. College students tend to want to look good when they go out. Many college students attribute this to the tone of their skin. For the college students we analyzed some things that are important to them. We found out that many college kids think that in order to look good they need to be tan.
We then thought about what time of year this is the biggest problem for most people. During the winter the need for tanning is most apparent. Advertising should be increased during the winter months to take advantage of this prime market. High school students, much like college kids, attribute being tan to looking attractive. Our marketing for high school students was focused around certain social events that take place in high school, such as dances. By advertising around the school dances we could take advantage of the rush to get the right look before those dances.
Advertising in the schools' newspapers would be a good idea to accomplish this. The third group we focused on is adults. This group was difficult to analyze because they don't congregate as frequently as kids do. Most adults work during the week and go out during the weekends. Many adults want to look tan for the weekends so advertising around sports clubs during the week would be effective. We determined separate marketing strategies for each of these groups.
The advertising strategy we came up with is to advertise in newspapers, yearbooks, and pass out fly ers. These advertisements will be vibrant, much like Caribbean Mist's atmosphere, to attract customers. From the interview, we were able to determine on average how much business Caribbean Mist gets in a days time, which gave us an idea on the amount of customers you get in a day and an idea on how to improve that number. We found out through the interview that Caribbean Mist is a locally owned company which gave us motivation to increase the business for your establishment. This interview gave us the necessary information to formulate the pertinent information to include on the website.
To get a better idea of the tanning market, we researched other tanning salons' web sites. The information gained from this research helped us decide what we feel is most important to include on Caribbean Mist's web site so it will stand out. The web site will have colorful, stimulating graphics and useful information for all customers. Through the research we have conducted, we have determined that a web site that will most likely attract customers must be easy to use and visually appealing. By creating this web site to be attractive, we can then increase the amount of business by broadening the amount of people that know about Caribbean Mist. Through the combination of our field research, interview, and market research, we were able to create recommendations on the basis of the information that was received.
Recommendations The field research that we conducted proved to be a valuable tool to help us come up with recommendations to design and implement a web site for Caribbean Mist. Each of the following recommendations has our ideas and rationale for creating an informative web site for clients and potential clients for Caribbean Mist. Our recommendations include sections on web hosting, design, content, and advertising. Web Hosting After deciding you want a website you are going to have to find a Web Host in order for it to be on the Internet so other people can view it. The World Wide Web is a massive collection of web sites; all hosted on computers called web servers all over the world. The web server or computer where your web site's html files, graphics, etc. reside is known as the web host.
Web hosting clients simply upload their web sites to a shared web server, which the ISP maintains to ensure a constant, fast connection to the Internet. A web hosting company provides you space on their web server which allows anyone on the Internet to view your web site. Web Hosts charge on a monthly basis and provide differing levels of service. After considering many possible web hosting companies and doing extensive research, we have selected three web hosting companies for you to choose from. These three companies are Infinology Smart Consumers, Start Logic Premier Web Hosting, and Host Save.
The first company, Infinology Smart Consumers, offers very complete and high quality web hosting packages. Their Basic Windows Model offers 500 MB of disk storage space, 5 GB of data transfer, instant account activation, Front Page 1998, 2000 & 2002 support, 24/7 email tech support, and one hour a month of toll free 24/7 tech support. These are the basic features in which you would use to create and maintain your website. The price for a 12 month term is $22.45/month which does not include a one-time setup fee of $25. The second company, Start Logic Web Hosting, offers several different hosting plans to fit your needs. All of their plans include generous amounts of space and features, a solid Tier 1 network, technical support and all are backed by their complete satisfaction guarantee.
The Basic Package for Start Logic is very similar to Infinology's package. It includes 500 MB of disk storage space, 20 GB of data transfer, and a limited offer free setup fee. The purchase price is $9.95 a month with a 30 day money back guarantee. After researching numerous web hosting companies, the company we recommend is Host Save. Host Save has two different plan features: Standard and Max. For your purposes the Standard Plan would be best and most affordable.
The monthly price with the Standard Plan is $7.95/month. This includes free setup and a domain name registration fee of only $1.00/month for the first year. The Standard Plan gives you 1000 MB of disk space and 100 GB of data transfer, which is ample disk and data transfer space for your website. Web features include Front Page 2002/2000/98 support, personal CGI directory and free graphical web site statistics. With the Standard Plan there is free phone support, 24/7 email support, online user groups, and an extensive knowledge base. Host Save's web site is web When you reach the home page you can click on Plan Features and Plan Pricing on the left hand side of the page to get more information about the Standard Plan.
The Plan Features chart should like the chart in the appendix. If you decide the Standard Plan is right for you then you simply click on the Sign Up Now!! button under the Plan Features chart and it takes you to the Sign Up Now Page. Once you get to this page there are just two easy steps to activate your account. First, you reserve your domain name, which we recommend you choose a domain name in which you can have. com or. net as the extension. Most people are familiar with these extensions are more likely to visit one of these sites. Our suggestion is that you choose web If you wanted Caribbean Mist as your domain name, then your website would have to be something other than web web or web because they are all already taken.
After you have picked out the domain name, the second and final step is to complete the quick order form. This should only take a few minutes, and after you have completed it, your account is instantly activated and you are ready to go. An optional feature for the Standard Plan that we highly recommend is Macromedia Contribute 2, the best tool available to build and maintain a successful website. The tools make it easy for non-technical users to update web content while maintaining site standards for style, layout, and code. Macromedia Contribute 2 makes it easy to get your site online, easy to manage your site, and requires no knowledge of HTML programming. If you do not already have an employee who is comfortable with HTML, then this is a must.
Training or hiring an employee to use HTML code can be very costly and time consuming. With Macromedia Contribute 2, anyone who is comfortable using programs such as Microsoft Word could create and maintain a very good website. Macromedia Contribute 2 is valued at $149.99, but is only $79.95 if purchased with the Standard Plan. It is a one time cost that would be very beneficial in creating and maintaining your website. Designing order to create a successful web site, it must have a good design and layout so that it will be inviting and easy to use for all users. From our field research and observations, we picked up a common tropical theme throughout the store which would be good to incorporate into the web site so that the users of the web site can enjoy the same tropical environment that you get when going to the store.
We also noticed in the observations the bright and exciting environment that is portrayed throughout the store. It is important that your website be vibrant and lively much like the store. We would also want to make this web site easy to navigate and contain several links to be able to get from one page to the next quickly. Theme To make your web site attractive and appealing to potential customers we must use a theme throughout the website that will give the user the same atmosphere that you would get if walking into the store.
We recommend that you use a vibrant tropical theme that will be eye-catching and draw in any users. To get this theme, Caribbean Mist must use bright colors on all the pages of the website so that the text will jump off the screen. It should contain a lot of animation such as flashing words, so the web site will seem vibrant and full of life. Also, to get the tropical theme it should contain several pictures and clip art of the beach and palm trees to provide the user with a tropical environment. These colors and pictures will be used on all the pages of the web site, so that the user will be left with the same atmosphere that you get when you go into the store. Layout For the homepage, we recommend that on the side of the page there be a toolbar with several different tabs for each different section of the web site.
An example of this is in the Madison Tanning Company Web Site as seen here in Figure 1. As you scroll your curse over each link the word lights up and performs an animation. This would be useful to the users to access the information they are looking for and the animations bring the web site to life. Along with these links, it would be beneficial to have a search box at the bottom of these links for customers to quickly search the web site by typing in a keyword. This toolbar of links and the search box will be available on every page of the website so it will be more user friendly.
At the top of each page on the web site will be the company name. It will appear in the large letters and in the same font type as seen on the company sign as seen in Figure 2. Caribbean Mist's logo of the sun and lizard will appear on the top of every page along with the company name so that the customer will always be aware of the name of the company. An example of what the design will look like on the website is seen here in Figure 2. At the bottom of every page will be the contact information for Caribbean Mist so that at any time a user could scroll down to the end of a page and find a way to contact the company. The contact information will include the name of the manager, the address of the store, a phone number, and an email address so if a user had any additional questions or concerns they could contact the company through many different media.
Creating the Design In order to implement this design plan you must have a somewhat good understanding of writing a webpage. Many of the design steps could be done by most first time web designers with the exception of some of the more advanced animations and search box. A web designer may have to be hired to assist in making this web site so that it can achieve its full potential. If you choose to hire a web designer rather than buy Macromedia Contribute 2 then we have some potential clients that could assist in web design.
Gray Scale Media offers unique solutions for all your corporate and consumer communication needs. The cost for one front page, five internal pages, contact page form, and flash banner animation is approximately $449. Gray Scale Media offers a full money back guarantee on its designs. Analyzing examples of the company's web sites they have previously designed and examine the costs and benefits; we believe that the Gray Scale Media web design fits the needs of Caribbean Mist. With assistance of a web designer it would only be a matter of a couple of weeks to get the web site completely designed and ready to be viewed on the web. This startup cost of $449 is minimal when you realize the benefits of having a well designed working web site.
Gray Scale media will provide cutting edge design solutions at an affordable price. They will realize the needs for your company and sculpt them into a workflow that makes sense. From initial mock ups to finishing touches, Gray Scale will keep the company informed on the progress they are making and will take any of your concerns into consideration. The results will be a web site that both Caribbean Mist and your customers will be pleased with. The benefits outweigh the one time web design cost for this project.
To contact Gray Scale Media, visit their website at web The website provides a toll free telephone number to talk to a consultant for free and get a free quote online by filling out the quote request form. Content The content of Caribbean Mist's web site is what the customers will seek for information. It will encompass information on the services that Caribbean Mist provides, different products the store carries, store hours, location, frequently asked questions, customer testimonials, history of the company, as well as a tour of the store on a total of eight pages. This section will only cover four of the eight pages that we feel need to be included on the website. The content of other four pages are included in the Appendix. Home Page The first page the customer will see when they arrive at Caribbean Mist's web page will be the "Home" page.
The content of the "Home" page will contain pictures of the business as well as the history of Caribbean Mist. To get a better idea of what the business looks like on the inside and to show the tropical side of Caribbean Mist, a virtual tour of the business will be included on the web site. This can be accessed by clicking on a link named "Take a Virtual Tour" on this page of the web site. By including this on the home page of the web site, the customers that are searching the web site can quickly learn about how the business was started without clicking on any other links. The cost of creating this page of the web site will take time to take pictures of the business and to type up the history of the business. The pictures can be taken by employees of the business, however, the history would be best written by the owner of Caribbean Mist.
The virtual tour can be video taped and this can be done by an employee of the business. It will take approximately two hours to complete this page of the website. Service Page When the "Services" tab of the menu bar is selected, a drop down menu will appear. The options within the drop down menu will be "Tanning" and "Other Services". When the tanning option is selected, a new page named "Tanning" will open. This page will contain the information on the different types of tanning beds Caribbean Mist has to offer.
An example of how the tanning beds could be displayed in Figure 3. Equipment Page When the customer clicks on the tanning bed icon or name, a new page will open providing information on that particular tanning bed. The type of information that would be included should consist of what makes that tanning bed stand out from each of the other tanning beds that Caribbean Mist has to offer. It can look something like the Figure 4. Some of the stand out information can be composed of the amount of wattage's the tanning bed has, an enlarged picture of the bed, whether it has face tanning bulbs, as well as any other information that would help customers learn more about the tanning bed. This section is important to include on the website because some of the questions that were asked during our observation included questions about the different types of tanning beds Caribbean Mist offered.
By including this on the web site, the customer will know about the beds and will have an idea of what type of tanning bed they want to tan in before they go. For this section, a picture of each of the beds will need to be placed on the web site and it would need to be updated when Caribbean Mist received new tanning beds or when they disposed of any of the tanning beds. An employee of Caribbean Mist could create the exact wording to include under each of the different types of tanning beds which would take approximately one hour to complete. Other Services Page When the other drop down menu option under the "Services" tab named "Other Services" is selected, another page will open providing information on the other services that Caribbean Mist offers. Much like the brochure that is available for customers in Caribbean Mist, this page will provide a list of the spa and nail services with descriptions and prices. To make this page more eye appealing, pictures of customers receiving some of the spa services should be included on the page.
From the observation and the interview that was conducted, it was evident that the non-tanning services are not as well known and do not get as much business. By including all the services provided by Caribbean Mist, it will help customers learn more about what Caribbean Mist has to offer which could lead to increased sales in the other areas. The wording that would be displayed on this web page can be the exact wording from the brochure and the pictures that would be placed on the web page would need to be taken. The amount of time that would be required to be spent on developing this page will be very minimal, approximately a half an hour to complete. Cost The cost to create the content of all eight pages of the website will take ten hours of employee work. Based on an employee being paid $7/hour, the total cost to complete this section will cost approximately $70.
Advertising The advertising effects for creating a website will be tremendous by exposing what they have to offer to a limitless audience. With the information being readily available and easy to use, this will increase your customer base. Another advertising advantage of creating a web site is the ability to update the web site whenever it is needed. For example, if Caribbean Mist got a new bed or put new bulbs in this could instantly be announced, thus having a potential to increase your customer base much faster. From our observation, the main customer base came from high school students, college students, and adults. We feel marketing the web site should focus on these groups of people.
Advertising around social events at the local high schools, handing out fly ers with the web address on it at local sports events, and advertising the web address in the school newspaper and year book are ways to reach the high school students. The cost of advertising in the school newspaper would cost $25-$50 depending on the size of the advertisement. The cost of the advertisement in the school year book can cost $75-$100. Placing an ad in the school newspaper is a way to advertise to college students. Purdue University's school paper, The Exponent, is available to students daily and the rates for advertising cost $10.40 per column per inch for a weekly ad. Another way to advertise to the college students would be to team up with other companies in the local area.
For example, Caribbean Mist could team up with Smoothie King, while you advertise Smoothie King inside your store; Smoothie King will advertise Caribbean Mist. This advertising would be virtually free considering both companies benefit from the advertisement. To accomplish this advertisement, it would be necessary to meet with the company you plan to team up with and discuss the details of how you plan to do this advertising. To reach the adults in the community, passing out fly ers by the International Spots Complex would be a great way to increase the awareness to this group of people. The cost of creating these handouts is approximately five cents per copy. The idea of staying fit goes along with looking good which is where tanning would come into play.
The web site address should also be added to the car that sits out in front of Caribbean Mist. Many people are familiar with the car; therefore painting the web address on the car will increase the awareness of the new web site. Without advertising your web site, no one would know it even exists. By implementing these methods people would find out about the web site which would increase the volume of business at Caribbean Mist. Cost Analyses In this section we will provide an analysis and estimate of the cost factors involved to implement and maintain your web site. There will be advertising costs, web hosting costs, and web site content and design costs.
The table in the appendix will help outline what these costs are. The types of advertising we recommended were ads in school newspapers, school year books, fly ers, and to add your web address on the car that currently sits out in front of Caribbean Mist. A school paper ad will be run for one week in a school newspaper and will cost approximately $25-$50 depending on the size of the ad. A year book ad will cost about $75-$100, but the benefits from this ad last much longer than a newspaper ad because it is less likely to be thrown away. The price for an inch in the Exponent is $10.40. We estimate that it would take about one hour to paint your web address on your car which could be completed by an artistic employee.
If an employee paints the address on the car, the cost to do this means of advertising would be the pay rate per hour. To make 500 fly ers to be handed out would cost about $25 at five cents per copy. The cost to have your web site hosted by Host Save will be $7.95/month. If you purchase Macromedia Contribute 2, the software that will help you create and maintain your website, it will cost an additional $79.95. The costs associated with the content of the web site previously discussed are the cheapest. The only costs involved will be having an employee lay it all out and make sure it is exactly how you want it.
We estimate this will take approximately 10 hours, so if you pay $7/hr it will be about $70. For the design of your web site you can choose to spend more money and have a professional company do it, or you can choose to purchase Macromedia Contribute 2 for $79.95 and try to create the web site yourself. If you were to have a professional company like Gray Scale Media design your web site, it will cost about $449. This will include one front page, 5 internal pages, a contact page, and a flash banner animation.
If you choose to have Gray Scale Media design your web site then you will not need to purchase Macromedia Contribute 2. We have outlined the costs and given you two totals in a chart that can be seen in the appendix. The first option includes buying Macromedia Contribute 2 and not having Gray Scale Media design your website. This option is considerably cheaper, but may result in a web site that is less professional looking.
The second option is have Gray Scale Media design your web site which costs more but will ensure the design of your web site is very professional. Cost Analyses Chart Advertising Costs School Paper Ad $25-$50 School Yearbook Ad $75-$1006 inch ad in Exponent $62.40 Painted web address on car $7500 fly ers $25 Web Hosting CostsHostSave web hosting rate $7.95/month Macromedia Contribute 2 $79.95 (Option 1) Website Content Costs Approximately 10 hours of work from employee $70 Web Design Costs GrayScale Media design rate $449 (Option 2) Total Costs (this includes 12 months of web hosting) Option 1 $439.75 - $489.75 Option 2 $808.80 - $858.80 Conclusion With the recommendations provided in this report, Caribbean Mist Inc. Tanning Spa has detailed information to produce a web site. From our extensive research, we became aware of the main goal for the company's web site and used this information as our basis for our recommendations. Choosing option one, using Macromedia Contribute 2, the costs are significantly less, however, an employee at Caribbean Mist would need to create the web site. The positive aspects to creating your own web site is that you are in charge of making it look exactly how you want the web site to look and the cost of doing this is half the cost of hiring Gray Scale Media to create the web page.
The negatives to going with option one is that you could possibly run across problems in designing the web site and some complex design options may not be able to be implemented. If you were to choose option two, having Gray Scale Media create the web page, the cost is double of option one, however, you will not have to deal with creating the web page or running across design problems. We feel option two would fit best with Caribbean Mist's web page needs. Having Gray Scale Media design and create the web page would be simple and cost effective for Caribbean Mist. By having increased advertisement of the web site, we feel more people will use all of Caribbean Mist's services you provide which will increase revenue in the long run. These pages include a products page, location page, testimonial page, and a frequently asked questions page. The costs associated in creating the following pages are included in the total costs in the cost analysis section of this report. Products Page Much like how the different types of tanning beds are displayed on the website, the types of products, such as lotions should be included on the website as well. This information can be accessed under the "Products" tab in the menu bar.
Caribbean Mist offers an array of different types of lotions and this was noted during the observation. If a customer is looking for a lotion, before they enter the store, they can have an idea on what types of lotions are offered. Including a link to the manufacturer of the product under each of the different types of lotions would be beneficial for the customer that wanted to know more about that product line. Figure 5 is an example of what to include in the "Products" page. It has a brief description as to why the products are important factor in tanning as well as a picture of the lotions the store has on display. This description is something that should be included on the Caribbean Mist "Product" page.
By having a picture displaying the different type of lotions the store has to offer as well as to gain customer awareness of the importance of using the products Caribbean Mist sells will be beneficial to the customer. To create this section, a picture displaying the different products as well as their manufacturers would be necessary including a link to each of the manufacturers' websites. Maintenance would need to be done on this section to keep it up to date with the latest products that Caribbean Mist carries. This section could possibly be a time consuming page due to the continually upkeep.
We estimate the amount of time to create this page of the website would take approximately two hours and about one hour each month to keep this page current. Location Page For customers that are browsing the World Wide Web and are looking for a good place to tan in West Lafayette, Indiana, one of the first things people look for are the location and store hours. By including these items on the website, this question that comes into many peoples' mind will be answered. When clicking on the "Location" tab within the menu bar on the top of the page, it will open a new page that has the address of Caribbean Mist as well as having a picture of the store front.
It also will have a small map on this page that looks like something from Map Quest. For customers that are uncertain of the area and are curious as to where Caribbean Mist is located, this page will alleviate their worries of finding the business. To complete this page, a picture of the store front will be needed as well as a map of the area. The store hours will also be listed under the "Location" tab in the menu bar. This was a question that was asked frequently during our observation of Caribbean Mist. The store hours change when business picks up and some customers may not be aware of this.
So, including this on the website will keep the customers informed of the different hours of operation. To implement this section, the normal store hours would be listed and the spring busy season hours will also be listed with a time frame of when these hours are affective. This would need to be updated to keep the time frame of spring busy season hours every year. The pictures would need to be taken of the business as well as a map and business hours would need to be placed on the website. This would take about one hour to complete this part of the page. Once a year when the effective busy season hours change, this part of the page would need to be updated.
This minimal task would take about fifteen minutes to update. Testimonial Page From the observation of Caribbean Mist, it is evident that the company prides itself on its cleanliness and friendly staff. This is something that should be addressed within the website and it will be accessed under the "Customer Testimonials" tab of the menu bar. This is an easy way to show people that are searching the World Wide Web for a local tanning salon how their business operates and treats their customers. The set up of the page should be kept simple, titling the page "Customer Testimonials" and listing the various comments that customers have said about Caribbean Mist as well as the customers' name. An example of how the page can be set up is displayed in Figure 6.
To complete this page Caribbean Mist would need to survey their current customers to get the customer testimonial page started. When their customers give their testimonials, Caribbean Mist would need to make sure the customer give their consent on using their testimonial online as well as asking how they would want their name displayed. This could take about two weeks to collect an ample selection of testimonials from customers and then another two hours sorting through the testimonials and pick which ones would be best to include on the page. This page should be updated quarterly so that potential customers who visit the sight can view different testimonials every time they visit the page.
The update could take approximately two hours each quarter to complete. Frequently Asked Questions Page Customers generally have many questions when it comes to tanning and we feel it is necessary to include a "FAQ" page to the Caribbean Mist website which can be reached under the "FAQ" tab of the menu bar. Topics that can be covered under this section include the health topics of tanning, and any other information that is covered in the brochure information available to customers within the store. This section can benefit the customers that have questions about tanning or other spa service information without having to enter the store.
The approximate amount of time that it will take to create this portion of the website is about two hours and an employee of Caribbean Mist could create the questions and answers for this section of the webpage. With these pages, the Caribbean Mist website will be complete and contain enough information for customers to become familiar with the store. The costs associated with these pages are included in the cost analysis in the chart displayed on page 10.
