Sean Palleschi Geology 101 News Report 11 April 16, 2002 Afghanistan Rattled Again by Qaukes, Two Dead Two people were killed and others were injured in northern district of Nahrin on Sunday in Afghanistan because of numerous tremors and earthquakes. Unfortunately, over the last three weeks, hundreds of people have died due to these horrific earthquakes. 'Pakistani seismologists said the Sunday quake measured 5.3 on the Richter Scale, only a little less intense that the series of shallow quakes which some one-thousand people in Nahrin district last month' (web). This amounts was considered to be light because most people lost everything they owned (homes destroyed) and ended up having to sleep in tents. Heavy rains added to the destruction as well. Most of the homes were made of some type of mud, which allowed the homes to collapse much quicker during the times when tremors were apparent.

'It has been raining here too and that will also cause houses to collapse quicker even by a small jolt' (web), said a villager nearby. On the bright side, International Aid agencies were quick to the scene and came prepared with food, housing / tents, and other helpful things that were desperately needed. However, this was not the case in 1998 when the quake killed several thousand people. It took weeks for the aid agencies to help out and bring food. As hard as it may be, something needs to be done to prevent such a tragedy because earthquakes clearly occur there all the time and take many lives with it. It is a well known fact that earthquakes occur there and it seems like nothing is being done about it.
