Why Do I Wish To Pursue a Graduate Degree? Lenora Randolph Managerial Communication / COM 515 Dr. Rick Hayman 28 May 2003 Why Do I Wish To Pursue a Graduate Degree? The profession of pharmacy is a multi-faceted environment. Generally speaking, the career is comprised of a retail and hospital-based type of practice.

Individuals choose to embrace one of these avenues based on personal preference and satisfaction. To expand upon the role of hospital-based pharmacists, a two-forked approach to professional development exists. For the individual that does not want to maintain the status quo, you can seek to move ahead and aspire for leadership roles within these two arenas. The two arenas of professional development are that of the clinical nature and the converse of management.

A clinical pharmacist can pursue an advance degree that would focus upon direct patient contact and support the health and welfare of a particular patient. That individual would have direct involvement in the medical care of that patient. On the other career development pathway of a hospital-based pharmacist is that of one seeking to advance through the management of the department. This person is responsible for the health and welfare of the system put in place to provide the care of all patients through the guidance and management of supporting staff.

In the chosen profession of pharmacy that I have embarked upon starting twelve years ago, I am at a crossroad in my career. As with most professions, one can choose to maintain this sense of status quo or choose to expand and develop professionally. It is my belief, based upon past life experiences that my greatest benefit to this chosen profession are through the development of my managerial skills. In doing so, I have chosen to pursue a graduate degree in the field of business. It is my opinion that through the instruction and discipline of a graduate degree, I will foster the positive attributes that I need to succeed in an ever-changing environment in the field of pharmacy and healthcare. Not only will the completion of this graduate program give me the insight and direction to propel a dynamic organization into the future, it will also afford me the liberty to pick and choose the job I feel would satisfy my needs and desires.

In looking at long-term planning professionally, my interest also lies in the possibility of growing and expanding into the realm of hospital administration. With this in mind, the graduate program I have chosen to pursue would also steer me in this direction and open up the avenues necessary to continue. In all, I believe my primary motivations are to be able to choose the position I feel I would desire most and to do well in that chosen position. My aspirations are not to seek greater monetary payment for my services, but in doing so and completing an advance graduate degree will provide this opportunity as well.
