1. After reading this article I felt the author had made a very strong point about the difference in classes we have in society. It is obvious that the author has spent some time in her life struggling with her past (mainly her family's background in terms of class) and her future as an articulate and educated member of society. The confusion she faced arose from the fact that she was brought up in a working class family, and at times her family failed to see the value of education showing discouragement and criticism. The author explains that her parents reluctantly and skeptically supported her education endeavors. Rather than enthusiastically supporting her ambitions of getting an education her family raised questions about her being away from home so long.
The author explains that her purpose for writing this article is to provide an example to which many people whose familial backgrounds are poor or working-class can relate and identify. 2. After reading this article I realized that there are a lot of people who must go through the same struggle with their educational ambitions and their family's class. The issue in the article is very realistic in the sense that, having so many people in this world all divided into different classes based on occupation and income there will be many "exceptions" as the author put it.
By exceptions she means the "unexpected" students and academics that come from these poor or working class families. I thought of the family's whose parents had to mortgage their houses to help pay for them to get through school. Thinking about all of this made me proud of all the people out there who have gone through the same struggle. Thus giving me an inspirational feeling and a high amount of respect for those individuals who went a step above their family's expectations, followed their ambitions, and beyond the expectations set upon their social standing. 3.
After reading this article I found myself feeling inspired by this woman's story. It made me feel fortunate to have been raised by my mother and father who are both part of middle class society. However, I was raised in two different homes due to the fact that my parents had gotten divorced when I was 7. Although my parents hadn't gone to any post-secondary institution they both began full time jobs when they were 18.
Unlike the author's parents who questioned her attending a post-secondary school my parents have always encouraged me and never let me consider going straight to work. This is the kind of uplifting feeling I got after reading the article. I myself have never had to deal with a personal dilemma involving classism as the author had, but I still felt her story had touched me as I read about her fear of distancing herself from her family. The idea that one person went beyond what her family expected, and what society doubted, is truly inspirational.
