Ivan Lieberman COMP 111 Does the internet destroy our community and our identity? Does the internet destroy our identity? 75 voters were asked", Has the internet had a more positive or negative impact on our lifes. 24% had no complaints, 62% internet is more good then bad, 2% neither, 0% life is less enjoyable with the internet, 1% the internet has significantly hurt my quality of life, and 9% thinks most people who hate the internet would never even a poll like this. The internet can destroy a person life in a heartbeat, by getting there SSN or even there credit card number, but now a days the internet is cracking down on that and bringing some programs in to stop that. I believe protecting your identity over the internet is not that bad because they have all of these programs out today.

You could use a personal certificate to protect your identity over the internet which is a statement guaranteeing the identity of a person or the security of a web site, you can control the use of you own identity by having a private key that only you know on your own system. When used with mail programs, security certificates with private keys are also known as digital ID'S. You can also check your security, when surfing the Web, make sure your Web browser indicates you are on a secure server, if the padlock icon in the corner of your window is locked, you " re fine. Also you can establish different email addresses for different people. The smart thing is to have one email for close family, one for business associates, and a third for throwaways. If you have to sign up for services online, give them your throwaway email address so you can separate unwanted email and spot viruses easier. Also you can use a credit card, when making an online purchase, always use a credit card.

If the product doesn't arrive or isn't what you thought you were paying for, you have the option to contest the charge. Furthermore, use only one of your cards for online purchases. Some place you can go for identity destroying is the identity resource theft center on the web and report what ever happened. I don't believe that the internet can also destroy your community. I strongly believe that it is the person sitting in that chair on the computer. A lot of people use the internet for business and in this society now a days, you need the internet to connect to others for work or even look stuff up for projects for school.

I feel the people that get destroyed by the internet are the people that use it wrong by talking to others they don't know to meet them or to get there picture or to cyber sex or what ever worthless stuff they do. The internet was formed for the business and student body for work, not play.
