Your Operations Security example essay topic

341 words
21 April 2002 Just like an investigator, criminals are looking for little clues that will indicate what a law enforcement agency is up to. The easiest way to compromise the operations security of a law enforcement investigation is by leaking little bits of information. If someone is trying to find out what your agency is up to, they will more than like get to know a couple of people on your team. If you are not careful what you say, even the smallest of details, it can be coupled together with other little bits of information that can expose the entire operation. Another way to help your agency out is to identify what your criminal counterpart does know about your operations. If you know or even suspect that a criminal knows anything about your operation, it is better to entirely revise the plan and ensure to make changes if you suspect that part of the operation is compromised.

For instance, if you know that one of your human intelligence officers has been identified during an undercover operation, it is better to get him away from the operation. Even if his health is not in danger, the only information that he will be able to receive more than likely will be false in order to expose more of the entire operation or to cover up another activity. Another way to strengthen your operations security is to apply countermeasures. Some of these will be very easy to deploy and others will be more difficult. A countermeasure can range from changing the personnel that are working undercover every couple of months / years or employing police deception activity and give the criminal a false sense of security. In order to keep your mission from being exposed to criminal activity, you must always be ready to make changes to the mission.

If you are not flexible with your mission, you may be forced to stop the operation before your mission objectives are reached.
