The character Harry potter, as portrayed in the book "Harry potter and the philosopher's stone" is a perfect example of the value of the quest in literature. As the novel progresses from beginning to end, it is evident to the reader that there is a significant change in Harry. In the beginning of the novel, he is a shy, reserved boy with many inhibitions who doest know where he fits in anywhere. By the end of the novel, Harry is more confident and feels a sense of great accomplishment. He can finally live up to the hero status that the magical world has believed of him since he was a baby. Through Harry's perilous quest for order, he found more than the philosophers stone itself.

He found where he belongs, who his friends are, and a sense of courage and bravery that Harry never knew he had. The story of Harry potter is one of a young boy trying to find his place in life in present day Britain. What separates Harry potter from any other protagonist in this literary genre, is the fact that 11 year old Harry potter is a wizard. While the premise of the book is very fantastic, the reader can easily relate to Harry's everyday problems with family, friends and belonging, in a fantastic atmosphere. The story begins at the boring, ultra-ordinary, nothing-out-of-place, number 4 privet drive where an orphaned Harry lives in the cupboard under the stairs in the house owned by his horrible relatives. Harry does not fit in with his "ordinary" relatives, because mysterious things just happen around him, and he can't explain why.

Harry's family consists of his rude, beefy, mustached Uncle Vernon, who loves making mean remarks about Harry. Aunt petunia, Harry's late mother's nosy sister, who has never failed to find wrong in Harry's appearance. And their fat, brat of a son Dudley, whose greatest hobby is using Harry as a punching bag. While often been called a little angel by his indulgent mother, Dudley is often called a pig in a wig by Harry. Harry has lived with his awful relatives since he was an infant and has grown quite used to their mistreatment. Harry never knew his parents.

The only reminder of his past with them is a scar in the shape of a lightening bolt on his forehead, led his whole life to believe that he is the good for nothing product of his irresponsible parents who died the car crash that left him with it. On the night of Harry's 11th birthday, life as he knows it is shattered. Rube us Hagrid, keeper of grounds and keys at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is sent by headmaster Dumbledore to inform Harry that he is a wizard, and everyone in the magical world knows his name. Harry is finally told the truth about his past, after his aunt and uncle tried for so many years to keep it from him. Harry's parents were a well respected witch and wizard, who were killed by the evil, dark lord Voldemort at the height of his power, when Harry was a baby.

Voldemort had killed innumerable people during his reign of terror, but for some inexplicable reason, after killing Harry's parents with one curse, when he turned his wand on to Harry, he was destroyed, at the height of his rise to power, voldemort was reduced to something barely alive, when All Harry was left with was a scar. He couldn't kill baby Harry potter. The entire magical community celebrated and credited Harry with the down fall of lord voldemort. Dumbledore believed that the best place for Harry to live until he was old enough to attend Hogwarts School was with the Dursley's, where Harry would live a regular life, out of the limelight, until his 11th birthday. Harry, hearing the truth for the first time in his life, is finding it very hard to believe. He has been led to believe his whole life that he was nothing.

All of a sudden, he finds out that he's famous, for something he doesn't even remember. Until it dawns on him, it finally makes sense. The mysterious happenings around him, his hair growing back one night exactly the way it was before aunt petunia had cut it all off. The time he somehow found himself on the rooftop, out of harms way when Dudley was chasing him one day at school. The feeling of familiarity he felt with odd people, complete strangers. It all made sense now.

Harry realizes that he never will belong at privet drive. He is a wizard and His place is at Hogwarts. Suddenly the tone of the book changes. The reader is transported with Harry from a boring, monotonous setting, to one of fantasy that takes place in a world where magic is real and the unimaginable becomes an everyday occurrence. Harry potter begins his journey at Hogwarts.
