Oklahoma History The Indians contributed to there problem. When the Spanish came to America there was already an indigenous people here. When Christopher Columbus first came over on the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria, He thought they were going to find a passage to India so when they saw the people they called them Indians. In 1803 the immigrants now known as Americans bought some land from the French called the "Louisiana Purchase".

The Americans then tried to make the Indians move to the territory known as Oklahoma so that the whiteman could go live in the land now known as Georgia, Florida and Alabama. The Indians should not have put up a fight when the Americans made them move. If the Indians would not have resisted they might have gotten more land, been treated better, they might not have lost as many people and been able to better run their own government. If the the Indians would not have resisted the demand that they leave when they were in the Southern part of the United States, the American men would not have had to leave their families and their homes to go down there and fight with the Indians. But since the Indians wouldn't leave their land and go where they were assigned, the Americans were mad and that made the Americans not want to help them by giving them a lot of food. The Americans gave them very little food and made a lot of the Indians starve.

The Americans finally rounded up all the Indians and took them to Oklahoma. Even though a lot of the Indians died on the way to Oklahoma, quit a few of them still survived. The ones that did not die in battle trying to save their land died on the way from diseases or starvation. The ones that came on foot had to worry with people that got to weak to walk and had to just lay there and die. The Indians that came by boat really had to worry about starvation and diseases and gross things like that. It was har for them to hunt for anything so they had to get by with what the Americans gave them.

Some of the Indians that went by boat had to go with handcuffs and chains around them so would not do anything crazy. The Americans could have given the Indians more land area. When Indians got there they saw that they were going to live in a tight spot surrounded by a bunch of other tribes and as a result they were mad. The Americans knew that it was going to be bad so they decided to put forts around the territory now known as Oklahoma so they could keep the fighting to a minimum.

If the Americans were not so mad they could have given the Indians land in what is now known as Kansas. Since the Indians fought with us and killed some of our men the Americans were not excited to help them stay alive and have more space. The government decided to put Fort Gibson in Oklahoma to stop some of the blood shed taking place. If the Indians would not have resisted they might have gotten more land, been treated better, they might not have lost as many people, and they might have gotten more land.

The Indians would have been treated better by the whites if they acted better toward us by leaving quicker and not making us force them to Oklahoma. The Americans would have felt like they would owe them something for not making us worry about them. They government was not completely evil or anything, so the government could have said since the Indians did not give us any trouble, we should give them some land in Kansas so that they do not get in fights all the time due to living to close together..
