Responsible people should be allowed to determine if they want to use it or not. As long as no one else is harmed in the process, it's fine. To solve this, put an age limit on the use. Sell it like tobacco! Buyers must be 18 or older.
When smoked, marijuana gives you a high, or a feeling somewhat like intoxication. It is illegal to drive intoxicated, so shall it be for drivers under the influence. I know that many people do, in fact, drive intoxicated. This probably means that people would drive high also. However, I feel that it is MUCH easier to drive high, than it is to drive drunk.
Either way you look at it, people have basic rights and need to be allowed to make decisions about their bodies for themselves. The fact that pot is illegal, makes it more appealing to some. Teenagers love to rebel. What's a better way than smoking pot? It gives you an awesome feeling and goes against parental wishes as well as breaking the law at the same time. It makes them feel like they are in control of their life and what they do instead of the government.
If marijuana were legalized, many people would stop using it because they feel the risk is taken out of it. Prohibiting the drug only attracts more users. Marijuana, like and other drug can be harmful. That is the chance you take when using drugs. However, marijuana does much less damage to the body than tobacco and alcohol. Tobacco products damage lungs and gums greatly.
Millions are diagnosed with lung cancer each year. Alcohol slowly tears the liver apart, making digestion difficult. Marijuana does none of these. Also, it is much easier for the body to function while high opposed to being intoxicated. History repeats itself. We must learn from our past mistakes.
In the past, an amendment was made to the Constitution to make alcohol illegal. This enraged America. It made drinking even more appealing. More people were abusing alcohol then, than any other year. This amendment was repealed and alcohol consumption decreased greatly. The same goes for marijuana.
If pot were legalized, that takes half of the fun out of the use. Educating the general public is a good idea. If more people were aware of the risks, they would choose to stop on their own. Marijuana is MUCH less addictive than cigarettes.
Nicotine can have you hooked after just one cigarette. To become addicted to marijuana, much more of the drug must be used. If we regulate marijuana use rather than prohibit it, most people would benefit. People DO have a right to make their own decisions.
Maybe one day the government will realize this. Marijuana needs to be legalized!
