Introduction Ibuprofen, aspirin and acetaminophen are all members of the wonder drug family and are involved in many of our everyday activities. In this experiment, I used blue and red litmus paper, and pH paper to conclude the pH values and acidity / basicity of different drugs found in the wonder drug family. Another reason for this experiment is to test its solubility in water to discover which drug will enter your bloodstream faster. I then added red cabbage juice to the variety of drugs, which is mixed with water, to determine the different indicator colors, while recording my observations in the data table. I will also be utilizing the library to find the effect of ibuprofen on your body and its chemical make-up. Many people in the world today just think!

SSI have some pain and swelling, why not pop in a pill? !" but they do not usually understand what they are putting into their body and what's going to happen once inside their body. They know it is supposed to take away the pain and swelling but they don! |t understand the chemical reactions taking place. This experiment is to help me better understand the wonder drug family and what the drugs exactly do. After putting on eye goggles and apron, gather graduated cylinders and clean thoroughly. 2. Measure 20-mL of tap water into the first graduated cylinder. This is your control. Fill each graduated cylinder with 10-mL of tap water. 3.

Gather each drug that listed under materials. 4. Using the mortar and pestle, pound each drug until it is finely crushed. 5. Add the finely crushed particles into each beaker. 6.

Stir water and chemical thoroughly using a stirring rod, rinsing after each mixture. 7. Obtain 4 strips of blue litmus and red litmus and pH paper. Carefully tear each one in half, creating 8 small pieces of each paper, placing them on paper towels. 8. Using a pipette or stirring rod, place one drop of each solution on the blue litmus, red litmus, and pH paper and observe color transformation.

Making certain to rinse pipette or stirring rod after coming in contact with each solution. 9. Record observations. Part 2 Red Cabbage Juice indicator Tests 10. Record color of solution before adding red cabbage juice. 11.

Add 10-mL of cabbage juice to each beaker. 12. Record observations. Part 3 Clean up 13. Carefully pour each beaker's solution into the drain. 14.

Thoroughly clean each beaker with paper towels making sure there is no contamination for the next class. 15. Place in garbage the red litmus, blue litmus, and pH papers. 16. Gather all drugs near your workstation and place them on the back table. 17.

Clean up workstation with paper towels. I did not observe any smells in any of the solutions and both the results for the generic and name-brand ibuprofen are the same for each test. Discussion Background Scientists found out that the part of willow bark that was bitter and good for fever and pain is a chemical called salicin. The body can convert the chemical after it is eaten to another chemical, salicylic acid.

By covering up one of the acidic parts of a salicylic acid with an acetyl group would cause it to convert the chemical into acetylsalicylic acid. Aspirin- acetylsalicylic acid Reagent- a chemical used to convert one substance into another substance in a chemical reaction. Ibuprofen- an acid that doesn! |t dissolve in water and helps in pain, fever and swelling symptoms (isobutylphenylpropianic acid). Prostaglandin- groups of hormones that are released only when cells are injured. Benzene Ring! V main component of oil and is found in many drugs in the wonder drug family.

Causes substances to not dissolve in water. Ibuprofen is a mild analgesic or pain reliever. It is a commonly used drug. Most people take it to relieve pain, reduce swelling (anti-inflammatory), or relieve menstrual cramps.

When a person takes ibuprofen it inhibits or does not allow the synthesis (making) of prostaglandins in the body. Prostaglandins are a group of hormones that are only released when cells are injured. These hormones are responsible for the redness, swelling, and fever that come with inflammation or infection. Ibuprofen was first patented in Britain and wasn! |t approved for use in the U.S. until a while later. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has not approved ibuprofen for the use of children under the age of 12. Warnings about ibuprofen include that it may cause allergic reactions, not to use it with any other drug, and women should not take it during their third trimester of pregnancy.

Doctors also warn of potential kidney damage to the elderly or those with heart or kidney disease. There are even gastrointestinal damage warnings and not to take it if you! |ve been drinking alcohol. The chemical name for ibuprofen is isobutylphenylpropianic acid, C 13 H 18 O 2. Interpretation By reviewing my data table, I can interpret the results of the tests done. I have found that the cabbage juice test was the most accurate and consistent in comparison to the litmus test. When observing the cabbage juice there were three main colors to look for: pink, blue, and green.

Pink indicates that the solution is an acid, neutral turned a bluish color and a greenish color meant the solution was a base. In the H 2 O column note that acetaminophen, aspirin, and ibuprofen have numbers in parenthesis. The number tells which of the three dissolved the best, one being the solution that dissolved the best. In observing my data table I conclude that none of the drugs I tested are bases. When comparing the drugs to my tap water, which was my control, I can determine the drugs that are acidic or neutral. Aspirin, ibuprofen, and advil-suedoephedrine (a form of ibuprofen) are all acidic.

Celebrex is more neutral than these drugs because the blue litmus stayed blue and the pH paper tested 7. I would think that Celebrex is neutral but my cabbage juice test leans more between acidic and neutral. This is an inconsistency in my test. Tap water (control) and acetaminophen are both considered neutral according to my data table. The consistency of aspirin, ibuprofen and advil-suedoephedrine were accurate.

When looking at the H 2 O column I can conclude that the only drug that dissolved in water would be Celebrex. All of the other drugs were not soluble in water. Hypothesis Taking all my observations and information that I found in the library into consideration I can give an educated explanation as to how and why generic and name-brand ibuprofen are the same. When I tested name-brand ibuprofen and a generic ibuprofen I discovered that their tests were considerably close to the same. The cabbage juice indicators were exactly the same. I found out from my library study that the coating around the generic ibuprofen is red while the coating around the Motrin IB is white.

I also found that they have the same chemical make-up (C 13 H 18 O 2) and chemical name, isobutylphenylpropianic acid. I know that ibuprofen is an organic compound because the chemical equation shows that carbon is included. There are few exceptions to this rule but it does not apply to ibuprofen. I know that ibuprofen does not dissolve in water because it contains the benzene ring and I can conclude that it is an acid from its chemical make-up.

It contains the same group that gives aspirin its acidic properties. To help you better understand this I will show you the structure of ibuprofen. H H CH 3 O CH 3 C C C C CH 3 H H OH The red group at the end is what gives ibuprofen its acidic properties. When ibuprofen is mixed with water then it gives one of its H+ ions away also making it an acid. This can be shown below: C 13 H 18 O 2 + H 2 O = C 13 H 17-O 2 + H 3 O+ Applications There are many ways people decide between be and name-brand ibuprofen. One way a person may decide which to buy is economics.

Many people are willing to pay the higher price for a premium product because it seems more reliable from advertising and promise of consistent quality even though the generic brands are the same. People often trust the name-brand ibuprofen they hear about it and don! |t really know anything about the generic brands. The second way people choose between generic and name-brand ibuprofen is their social status. A person high in society is going to buy the name-brand over the generic because they have the money. While a person lower in society is going to buy the generic brand instead of the name-brand ibuprofen to save money. The third way people may choose between generic and name-brand ibuprofen is depending on their insurance.

Some insurance companies may be willing to pay for their medication if it is generic so the consumer will choose to buy to generic ibuprofen. Some insurance companies may be willing to pay for the medication if it is a name-brand ibuprofen so the consumer will choose to buy the name-brand. One final way a person may decide between generic or name-brand ibuprofen is availability. When a consumer walks into a store they may be out of generic ibuprofen and they will have to go with the name-brand or go to a different store. It may also be the other way around. The store could be out of name-brand ibuprofen, so the consumer would have to go with the generic brand or go to another store.

Conclusion I gained a lot of knowledge while doing this lab report. One thing I learned was that ibuprofen is a weak acid with a pH of 6. It is such a weak acid that it doesn! |t have such a dramatic effect oh your stomach than some other drugs. It is a weak acid because of the acidic covering around the pill. The coating is COOH which is a carbonate indicating that is it acidic. Another thing I learned was that ibuprofen has many warnings.

Some I have heard of before, but I never knew women in their third trimester of pregnancy shouldn! |t take ibuprofen because it may cause problems in the unborn child or complication during birth. I also learned that anyone who consumes three or more alcoholic drinks in one day should not take ibuprofen because it may cause stomach bleeding. The third thing I learned was that ibuprofen is not just a pain reliever. Whenever I though of ibuprofen I thought it was just for pain, but it is also an anti-inflammatory (reduces swelling) drug, and it is anti-pyretic (reduces fever). One final thing I learned is that there is no significant difference between generic and name-brand ibuprofen other than cost. They both have the same pH, chemical make-up, chemical name, and same effect on your body.

All of the things I have learned in this experiment are important to me for many different reasons. Last year during basketball season I had a knee injury and one of the first things they told was to take ibuprofen. I just listened to them but yet I had no idea what it was actually doing and how it was helping the pain and swelling go away. It is also important to me to know that name-brand and generic ibuprofen are the same other than cost and maybe the coating on the pill. I like to save as much money as I can and this will help me to keep that going. Why would anyone ever buy a product that is the same but has different names for a higher price?

It happens a lot in our society and now I am aware of that.
