The pros and cons of legalizing marijuana; pros Marijuana can be positive and help people in many different ways. Even though many people are against marijuana use, they change their mind for medical reasons when they see how it helps. There are many people who are against the use of marijuana, and it is because they only see one side, which is the bad side. They do not look at what good it does and how helpful it can really be. There are people who suffer from pain, stress, and mental issues that nothing can help them feel better or cope with the problems. Marijuana seems to be able to allow people to cope better with their problems more than anything else.

Legalizing the drug also means we can treat the problem of drug abuse as a medical problem not a criminal one. It is proven that when people have HIV, AIDS, or other diseases that cause major weight loss marijuana seems to be able to help. It does not get rid of the disease, but it makes them feel better. Marijuana gives people with these diseases an appetite, which allows them to be healthier and stronger so they can fight the disease for a longer time. It does not make you have a healthy diet and eat properly, but it helps give you the choice eat right and help yourself. Legalizing marijuana can also lower the crime rates of communities.

This is possible because it will eliminate the need for underground illegal sales of the herb. It is known that marijuana sales are high in the US and keep rising. The US spends approximately 8.26 million dollars each year to try to keep the drugs off the streets. In turn this can all be turned into profit if the US put a tax on the drug like they have on alcohol and cigarettes already.

If the US legalized marijuana there would be a little bit more room in jails to accommodate more violent criminals, 1/6th of the people in jail are in for non-violent marijuana related crimes. It cost a lot of money to have a person in jail too. It has also been proven that marijuana is not a lethal drug. The US could be making a lot of extra money each year by legalizing the drug.

Cons of legalizing marijuana Marijuana is believed to cause danger and even possible crime. When people use marijuana and get "high" they get in a state of mind that makes them careless and not really think about their actions before they do them. Smoking marijuana also causes late reaction to things so by the time it registers it is too late. You should never drive because you can decide to maneuver too late and cause a major accident and even kill somebody.

Too many innocent people die each year from drug related accidents. There is no reason to get in a vehicle and risk the chances of your own life, anyone with you, or any innocent person. Many people use marijuana daily and when the addiction becomes so strong that they cannot function without it more serious problems begin to arise. People use marijuana to get "high" and relax and be in a good mood after a long stressful day for recreational purposes. After a while of smoking marijuana and becoming more immune to the effects it has on you people begin to use other drugs that are much more harsh to your body. This is how marijuana can kill many people.

Not marijuana it self, but the addiction leading to other more harmful drugs that can kill. People say, "I'm only going to smoke when I really need it, and I will not ever do other drugs". No one can promise that. Marijuana is a gateway drug that leads to the use of other much more harmful drug use.

Even if marijuana was legal and you had to be an adult of certain age, this would only cause more marijuana use of minors and children. If marijuana is legal for some then it is more capable of getting for anyone. Children will begin to steel from parents and older siblings or friends. This will only cause more headaches and create more problems for society. There is no reason anyone should need to use marijuana to function properly or feel better, and even worse get children to be involved.

There are already enough drug problems with underage children and students; this will only make the problem worse. Would you want to come home and find out that your child or children are getting drugs from who know where and who and if it is traced with something? Many people smoke marijuana to get rid of their problems and feel better. People do not realize that their problems only go away temporarily and once the high is gone their problems are back to face. Then they just go and smoke some more until the next time they come down from the high and this starts all over again. People who do this are not really dealing with their problems; they are just pushing them out of sight out of mind.

Is this really a way to live and never face the truth? When people fight for the use of marijuana to stay illegal they are only thinking of the well being of the community and how much better people would feel without it. Marijuana is only causing problems for society and making it harder for the use of marijuana to be controlled. It should not be legal because there are many other ways to cope with life and problems other than going and doing drugs.

There will be a time that you have to face the facts and cannot just go smoke and forget what is going on.
